BMW 7 Series: N63/N63B V8 Excessive Oil Consumption
N63/N63B V8 Excessive Oil Consumption is a very common engine fault on the BMW 7 Series on the 2008 onward cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs ≈A$2,580 to ≈A$7,820 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 12 documented faults on the BMW 7 Series.

What goes wrong
The twin-turbocharged N63 (F01/F02, 2008-2015) and updated N63B (G11/G12, 2015-present) V8s are documented for abnormally high oil consumption, typically 1-2 litres per 1,000 km under normal use. Heat-soak from the centrally-mounted turbos (valley-mounted between cylinder banks) causes oil to carbonise on intake valves and pass the piston rings and valve stem seals during hot restarts. BMW issued a Customer Care Programme in Australia covering valve stem seals, valve cover gaskets, PCV system, oil separator, and ECU reflash, explicitly acknowledging the defect. Without remediation, catalytic converters and oxygen sensors suffer secondary damage from oil burning.
What you would notice
- Oil level drops 1-2L between 1,000 km service intervals
- Blue smoke from exhaust on cold start or hard acceleration
- Fouled or oil-contaminated spark plugs
- Catalytic converter damage or P0420/P0430 fault codes
- Oil consumption warning light activating frequently
How to check it
Where to look. Engine valley between cylinder banks — valley-mounted turbos, valve stem seals, PCV/oil separator, piston rings
Check oil level relative to last service date — any consumption over 0.5L/1000km is a red flag.
Inspect tailpipe for blue-tinged carbon deposits.
Pull spark plugs to check for oil fouling.
Request service history showing oil top-ups between scheduled changes.
Ask specifically whether BMW's Customer Care Programme repairs (valve stem seals, PCV system) have been performed.
What it costs to put right
≈A$2,580 to ≈A$7,820 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “Has the BMW Customer Care Programme (valve stem seals, PCV system) been completed?”
- “What is the typical oil consumption between services?”
- “Have the catalytic converters been replaced or tested recently?”
- “Are there any stored engine fault codes related to misfires or lean running?”
Now check the BMW 7 Series you are actually looking at
Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car still has money owing on it, has been written off or reported stolen, what kms it showed in past sale ads, whether it has had accident repair claims and what it is worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate and its state for the A$17.90 Vehicle Check, or the full history from A$24.99.

BMW 7 Series buyer questions
Is n63/n63b v8 excessive oil consumption serious on a BMW 7 Series?
We rate it major and very common on the BMW 7 Series. The twin-turbocharged N63 (F01/F02, 2008-2015) and updated N63B (G11/G12, 2015-present) V8s are documented for abnormally high oil consumption, typically 1-2 litres per 1,000 km under normal use. Without remediation, catalytic converters and oxygen sensors suffer secondary damage from oil burning.
How much does it cost to fix on a BMW 7 Series?
≈A$2,580 to ≈A$7,820 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.
Which BMW 7 Series years are affected?
Our research records this fault on the 2008 onward BMW 7 Series. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
How do I check for it before I buy?
Check oil level relative to last service date — any consumption over 0.5L/1000km is a red flag. Inspect tailpipe for blue-tinged carbon deposits. Pull spark plugs to check for oil fouling. Request service history showing oil top-ups between scheduled changes. Ask specifically whether BMW's Customer Care Programme repairs (valve stem seals, PCV system) have been performed.
