Honda Fit: i-DCD clutch actuator motor failure

i-DCD clutch actuator motor failure is a common transmission fault on the Honda Fit on the 2013–2020 cars, and we rate it critical. Putting it right costs ≈A$1,840 to ≈A$5,060 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 42 documented faults on the Honda Fit.

What you are looking at

No photograph available

We do not hold a verified photograph of the Clutch yet. We would rather show none than show a picture of a different part.

What goes wrong

The i-DCD transmission uses an electric clutch actuator motor with an integrated position sensor to modulate engagement of the dual wet clutch pack, replacing the conventional hydraulic clutch slave cylinder. The actuator motor brushes and sensor assembly are susceptible to internal wear and moisture ingress, particularly in humid environments. When the actuator fails, the TCU loses the ability to control clutch pressure accurately, resulting in complete inability to engage drive or reverse, severe judder immediately on engagement, or the transmission defaulting to a single-clutch limp mode. Honda extended warranty coverage on this component following consumer complaints and a class-action outcome in Japan, but many units are now outside that extended period.

What you would notice

  • Sudden inability to select drive or reverse
  • Severe judder immediately on cold startup engagement
  • Transmission enters limp mode with significantly reduced power
  • Clutch actuator DTC stored — P17F0 or similar codes
  • Red or yellow transmission warning light on dashboard

How to check it

Where to look. Clutch actuator assembly bolted to left side of i-DCD transmission housing

  1. Request an OBD scan specifically targeting i-DCD transmission DTCs before test drive.

  2. Test cold-start behaviour as actuator faults present most clearly when the transmission is cold.

  3. Ask for Honda warranty claim history — many units received actuator replacement under Honda's extended warranty programme.

  4. Check for any previous transmission replacement documentation.

What it costs to put right

≈A$1,840 to ≈A$5,060 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, converted to Australian dollars, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the clutch actuator ever been replaced under warranty or out of pocket?”
  • “Was any Honda extended warranty claim made for transmission issues?”
  • “Has the vehicle been diagnosed by a Honda dealer for stored transmission fault codes?”
  • “Is there any remaining Honda coverage on the i-DCD drivetrain?”

Now check the Honda Fit you are actually looking at

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car still has money owing on it, has been written off or reported stolen, what kms it showed in past sale ads, whether it has had accident repair claims and what it is worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate and its state for the A$17.90 Vehicle Check, or the full history from A$24.99.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Honda Fit buyer questions

Is i-dcd clutch actuator motor failure serious on a Honda Fit?

We rate it critical and common on the Honda Fit.

How much does it cost to fix on a Honda Fit?

≈A$1,840 to ≈A$5,060 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Honda Fit years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2013–2020 Honda Fit. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

Request an OBD scan specifically targeting i-DCD transmission DTCs before test drive. Test cold-start behaviour as actuator faults present most clearly when the transmission is cold. Ask for Honda warranty claim history — many units received actuator replacement under Honda's extended warranty programme. Check for any previous transmission replacement documentation.
