Mercedes-Benz GLA: M270 Water Pump Cover Cracking and Coolant Leak
M270 Water Pump Cover Cracking and Coolant Leak is a common cooling fault on the Mercedes-Benz GLA on the 2013–2019 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs ≈A$830 to ≈A$2,020 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 21 documented faults on the Mercedes-Benz GLA.

What goes wrong
The M270 1.6T uses an internal belt-driven water pump housed inside a plastic cover on the front of the engine block. This plastic cover is known to develop cracks at stress points, leading to coolant weeping or sudden coolant loss. Because the leak originates internally behind the front cover, it is often mistaken for a head gasket issue. Left unaddressed it causes overheating and potential head damage. Mercedes extended warranty coverage was offered in some regions.
What you would notice
- Coolant loss without visible external puddle under the car
- Sweet smell from the engine bay after driving
- Coolant warning light or temperature gauge climbing above normal
- White residue or staining around the front lower engine block
- Overheating episodes with no obvious external leak source
How to check it
Where to look. Front of engine block, water pump housing/cover behind the timing chain cover
Inspect the front lower engine area for coolant residue or staining.
Check coolant reservoir level and look for discolouration.
Ask about coolant top-up history.
Have a pressurised coolant system test performed if any history of coolant loss is present.
What it costs to put right
≈A$830 to ≈A$2,020 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “Has the coolant level ever needed topping up between scheduled services?”
- “Has the water pump or its cover been replaced, and is there a receipt?”
- “Has the car ever overheated or had the temperature gauge move above the normal midpoint?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car still has money owing on it, has been written off or reported stolen, what kms it showed in past sale ads, whether it has had accident repair claims and what it is worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate and its state for the A$17.90 Vehicle Check, or the full history from A$24.99.

Mercedes-Benz GLA buyer questions
Is m270 water pump cover cracking and coolant leak serious on a Mercedes-Benz GLA?
We rate it major and common on the Mercedes-Benz GLA.
How much does it cost to fix on a Mercedes-Benz GLA?
≈A$830 to ≈A$2,020 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.
Which Mercedes-Benz GLA years are affected?
Our research records this fault on the 2013–2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
How do I check for it before I buy?
Inspect the front lower engine area for coolant residue or staining. Check coolant reservoir level and look for discolouration. Ask about coolant top-up history. Have a pressurised coolant system test performed if any history of coolant loss is present. Look here: Front of engine block, water pump housing/cover behind the timing chain cover
