Mitsubishi Outlander: Jatco CVT Shudder, Overheating and Premature Failure

Jatco CVT Shudder, Overheating and Premature Failure is a common transmission fault on the Mitsubishi Outlander on the 2013–2016 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs ≈A$3,220 to ≈A$8,280 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 47 documented faults on the Mitsubishi Outlander.

What you are looking at

No photograph available

We do not hold a verified photograph for this fault yet. We would rather show none than show a picture of something else.

What goes wrong

Non-PHEV Outlander models from 2012 onward use a Jatco JF016E or JF011E CVT. These units are prone to shuddering at low speed, hunting between ratios on inclines, and overheating when towing or driving in hilly terrain. Belt and pulley wear can cause sudden loss of drive. The CVT fluid is often left unchanged well past Mitsubishi's 40,000 km recommendation, dramatically accelerating wear. Replacement or remanufactured units are the most common major repair on high-mileage examples.

What you would notice

  • Shuddering or juddering sensation at 30–60 km/h
  • Revving high with delayed forward movement from a standstill
  • Transmission warning light with code P0868 or P0840
  • Burning smell after towing or sustained hill climbing

How to check it

Where to look. CVT unit mounted transversely in engine bay

  1. Check CVT fluid colour and smell — it should be pink/red and odourless; brown or burnt fluid indicates wear.

  2. Scan for CVT DTCs.

  3. During test drive, accelerate moderately from a standstill and hold 40–60 km/h for shudder.

  4. Ask for CVT fluid service history and mileage at each change.

What it costs to put right

≈A$3,220 to ≈A$8,280 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, converted to Australian dollars, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “When was the CVT fluid last changed and at what odometer reading?”
  • “Has the vehicle ever been used for towing or driven extensively in mountainous terrain?”
  • “Have any transmission warning lights appeared or codes been cleared?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car still has money owing on it, has been written off or reported stolen, what kms it showed in past sale ads, whether it has had accident repair claims and what it is worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate and its state for the A$17.90 Vehicle Check, or the full history from A$24.99.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Mitsubishi Outlander buyer questions

Is jatco cvt shudder, overheating and premature failure serious on a Mitsubishi Outlander?

We rate it major and common on the Mitsubishi Outlander.

How much does it cost to fix on a Mitsubishi Outlander?

≈A$3,220 to ≈A$8,280 at independent workshop rates, shown as an approximate guide in Australian dollars. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Mitsubishi Outlander years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2013–2016 Mitsubishi Outlander. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

Check CVT fluid colour and smell — it should be pink/red and odourless; brown or burnt fluid indicates wear. Scan for CVT DTCs. During test drive, accelerate moderately from a standstill and hold 40–60 km/h for shudder. Ask for CVT fluid service history and mileage at each change.
