Known BMW 1 Series faults
Every fault below is documented specifically for this model — researched and verified before it’s published.
116d/118d/120d/123d models with the N47 engine (E87 from 2007, F20 until ~2015) can snap or strip their timing chain, which sits at the rear of the engine against the firewall — so even inspection requires engine-out labour. Failure bends valves and often destroys the engine; failures commonly occur between 80,000-160,000 km. BMW issued TSB SI B11 03 10 and a quiet 2015 'quality enhancement' goodwill scheme, long expired — buyers today carry the full risk.
Symptoms to notice
Rattle/tinkling from the back of the engine at idle (like a bag of nails)
Rattle loudest on cold start or at ~2,000 rpm
Whining from the rear of the engine
Sudden non-start after a bang (chain gone)
What to check
With the engine idling and bonnet up, listen at the windscreen end of the engine (rear) for a metallic rattle — use a phone against the bulkhead if unsure. Ask for proof the chain has been replaced; on an original-chain car over 100,000 km, budget $3,500-5,000 for preventive replacement (engine-out or gearbox-out job).
Where to look: Rear of the engine, between engine and firewall
Ask the seller
“Has the timing chain ever been replaced (invoice, not verbal)?”
The hot-hatch M135i (N55, 2012-2016) and M140i (B58, 2016-2019) use the turbo 3.0L six. The N55 M135i develops wastegate rattle on cold start (a monitored nuisance). The B58 M140i is very robust but leaks oil/coolant from the oil filter housing gasket and adjacent brittle plastic coolant hose with age. Both are strong engines; these are the genuine items to check rather than any structural flaw.
Symptoms to notice
Wastegate rattle on cold start (N55 M135i)
Oil or coolant weep around the filter housing (B58 M140i)
Slow unexplained coolant loss
What to check
On an M135i listen for turbo wastegate rattle on cold start. On an M140i check the oil filter housing area for oil/coolant residue and monitor the coolant level. Ask whether the housing gasket and coolant vent hose have been done on the B58.
Where to look: Turbo wastegate and oil filter housing on the 3.0L six
Ask the seller
“Does the turbo rattle on cold start (M135i)?”
“Any oil or coolant leak from the filter housing (M140i)?”

Like any used car, it depends on the specific example and its service history. Across the 45 documented faults for the BMW 1 Series, the recurring problem areas are engine, cooling, and fluid leaks. A BMW 1 Series with a full service history and no signs of the issues listed on this page can be a sound buy but each one needs to be checked individually before you commit.
What are the most common problems with a used BMW 1 Series?
+
We've catalogued 45 known faults for the BMW 1 Series, covering engine, cooling, and fluid leaks. Two are written out in full on this page. The rest — with the symptoms to notice, what to inspect, and typical repair costs for each — are free once you create an account.
How much do repairs cost on a BMW 1 Series?
+
Most single repairs on the BMW 1 Series fall between $850–$3,500 at NZ independent-workshop rates. Knowing which ones to look for before you view is what lets you negotiate the price down or walk away.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a BMW 1 Series?
+
Yes. A BMW 1 Series inspection focused on its known weak points is the single best way to avoid an expensive mistake. KickTyres gives you a guided, model-specific inspection plus a market valuation and negotiation figure for $17.90 far less than the cost of missing one of the faults on this page.
