Without proper tension against the bore they let oil past, so the engine burns oil, then knocks, and can eventually seize or stall while driving. 02Valve cover gasket oil leak on the Nu 2.0

The moulded valve cover gasket on the Nu 2.0 hardens with heat cycling and starts weeping oil down the back of the engine. On its own it is a modest job, but it matters more on this engine than most: the same generation has a known oil-consumption problem, and a leak makes it far harder to tell whether the level is dropping because the engine is burning oil or simply losing it.
