Mazda CX-3: Front lower arm inner bush failure causing clunk and wander
Front lower arm inner bush failure causing clunk and wander is a common suspension fault on the Mazda CX-3 on the 2015 onward cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $420 to $1,350 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 17 documented faults on the Mazda CX-3.

What you are looking at
Example of the part — not this vehicleA separated lower ball joint: the control arm has dropped and the wheel has splayed out under the guard.
What goes wrong
The front lower control arm on both the DJ CX-3 and DM CX-30 uses a pressed-in rubber inner pivot bush that is subject to hydrolytic degradation in the wet climate conditions common in NZ and southern AU states. The rubber compound separates from the outer steel sleeve between 70,000–120,000 km, initially producing a dull clunk over sharp bumps and kerb strikes. As the bush deteriorates further, the arm pivot moves laterally during braking and cornering, causing tramlining on grooved roads, mild steering wander on the straight, and an asymmetric pull under braking. Front tyre wear also accelerates as toe alignment shifts dynamically. The bush is a pressed-fit replacement; many aftermarket suppliers offer a polyurethane alternative with extended service life though at the cost of slightly firmer NVH. Replacement requires a hydraulic press and subframe arm removal.
What you would notice
- Clunking from front suspension over sharp bumps or potholes
- Tramlining or pulling on grooved road surfaces
- Steering wander at highway speeds
- Uneven or accelerated front tyre wear
- Mild pull to one side under firm braking
How to check it
Where to look. Front lower control arm inner pivot — chassis-side mount point at each front corner
Inspect the rubber for cracking, separation from the outer sleeve, or extrusion out of the pressed-in housing.
Check wheel alignment printout for toe deviation outside Mazda spec as corroborating evidence.
If a workshop inspection is possible: With vehicle on a hoist, grasp each front lower arm and apply forward/rearward and lateral force — any visible movement at the inner bush mount beyond 2 mm indicates failure.
What it costs to put right
$420 to $1,350 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “When was the last wheel alignment performed and were any suspension components flagged?”
- “Has any clunking from the front suspension been noticed over bumps?”
- “Have the front lower arm bushes been replaced, and if so with OEM or aftermarket polyurethane?”

Mazda CX-3 buyer questions
Is front lower arm inner bush failure causing clunk and wander serious on a Mazda CX-3?
We rate it major and common on the Mazda CX-3. How much does it cost to fix on a Mazda CX-3?
$420 to $1,350 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.
Which Mazda CX-3 years are affected?
Our research records this fault on the 2015 onward Mazda CX-3. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
How do I check for it before I buy?
Inspect the rubber for cracking, separation from the outer sleeve, or extrusion out of the pressed-in housing. Check wheel alignment printout for toe deviation outside Mazda spec as corroborating evidence. If a workshop inspection is possible: With vehicle on a hoist, grasp each front lower arm and apply forward/rearward and lateral force — any visible movement at the inner bush mount beyond 2 mm indicates failure.
