Mazda Mazda3: SkyActiv-X SPCCI Spark Plug Fouling and Misfire

SkyActiv-X SPCCI Spark Plug Fouling and Misfire is a common engine fault on the Mazda Mazda3 on the 2019 onward cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $380 to $650 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 37 documented faults on the Mazda Mazda3.

What you are looking at

No photograph available

We do not hold a verified photograph for this fault yet. We would rather show none than show a picture of something else.

What goes wrong

The e20A SkyActiv-X engine operates in spark-controlled compression ignition (SPCCI) mode under light loads, requiring extremely lean air-fuel ratios. Short-trip driving prevents the engine reaching full operating temperature, causing fuel and carbon to foul the specialised iridium plug electrodes prematurely. Fouled plugs force the ECU to abandon SPCCI mode, triggering P030x misfires, rough idle, and illuminated CEL; Mazda halved the recommended plug replacement interval via a service bulletin in response.

What you would notice

  • Rough idle or stumble when cold, improving after warm-up
  • Hesitation and flat spot under light throttle between 40–90 km/h
  • Illuminated check engine light with P0300–P0304 misfire codes
  • Fuel economy notably worse than quoted figures
  • Engine occasionally falls out of SPCCI mode into spark-ignition only

How to check it

Where to look. Top of engine — four spark plug wells under coil-on-plug ignition coils

Request service history showing plug replacement at or before 30,000 km intervals. If a workshop inspection is possible: Start the cold engine and check for rough idle or hesitation; scan for any stored P030x misfire or P2097 lean-mixture codes with an OBD-II reader.

What it costs to put right

$380 to $650 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Can you show me the spark plug replacement records, and were they done at the revised 30,000 km interval?”
  • “Has the car been used predominantly for short city trips or longer highway runs?”
  • “Has a check engine light ever appeared, and if so what code was stored?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Mazda Mazda3 buyer questions

Is skyactiv-x spcci spark plug fouling and misfire serious on a Mazda Mazda3?

We rate it major and common on the Mazda Mazda3. The e20A SkyActiv-X engine operates in spark-controlled compression ignition (SPCCI) mode under light loads, requiring extremely lean air-fuel ratios. Short-trip driving prevents the engine reaching full operating temperature, causing fuel and carbon to foul the specialised iridium plug electrodes prematurely. Fouled plugs force the ECU to abandon SPCCI mode, triggering P030x misfires, rough idle, and illuminated CEL; Mazda halved the recommended plug replacement interval via a service bulletin in response.

How much does it cost to fix on a Mazda Mazda3?

$380 to $650 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Mazda Mazda3 years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2019 onward Mazda Mazda3. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

Request service history showing plug replacement at or before 30,000 km intervals. If a workshop inspection is possible: Start the cold engine and check for rough idle or hesitation; scan for any stored P030x misfire or P2097 lean-mixture codes with an OBD-II reader.
