Mini Countryman: R60 Cooper D / SD N47 Diesel Rear Timing Chain Catastrophic Failure

R60 Cooper D / SD N47 Diesel Rear Timing Chain Catastrophic Failure is a common engine fault on the Mini Countryman on the 2012–2016 cars, and we rate it critical. Putting it right costs $5,000 to $18,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 15 documented faults on the Mini Countryman.

What goes wrong

The BMW N47 2.0-litre diesel engine used in R60 Cooper D and SD Countryman models is subject to a catastrophic and thoroughly documented timing chain failure. Uniquely, the N47's timing chain is mounted at the rear of the engine (firewall side), requiring the engine to be removed for access. The chain tensioner and guide fail, allowing the chain to skip or snap, destroying the engine. The rear-mounted chain makes preventive replacement extremely expensive, and many owners only discover the issue when the engine fails. This fault has been the subject of class action proceedings in the UK. Any N47 Countryman over 100,000 km without documented chain replacement must be treated as imminently at risk.

What you would notice

  • Rattling from the rear of the engine (sounds like it comes from the firewall side) on cold start
  • Rattle that does not clear after warm-up or worsens progressively
  • Engine vibration at idle that increases over time
  • Sudden catastrophic power loss and engine stopping if chain fails
  • Engine cranks but does not start after chain failure

How to check it

Where to look. Rear of N47 engine block (firewall side) - chain is not visible from the front of the engine

Cold-start and listen carefully for rattle emanating from the rear (firewall) side of the engine. Ask explicitly whether the N47 timing chain has been replaced - any example over 100,000 km without documentation is very high risk. Factor full chain replacement into purchase price if history is absent. Avoid examples with unknown service records entirely. Have a specialist perform a pre-purchase compression test.

Parts involved: Timing chain.

What it costs to put right

$5,000 to $18,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the N47 timing chain, tensioner, and guides been replaced, and at what mileage?”
  • “Any rattling noise on cold start, particularly from the rear of the engine?”
  • “Can you provide full dealer or specialist service records for this vehicle?”

Now check the Mini Countryman you are actually looking at

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Which Mini Countryman years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2012–2016 Mini Countryman. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
