What goes wrong

Grandis models built from 2004 to 2008 were recalled in August 2014 (PRA 2014/14258) because the solder on the circuit board inside the lighting stalk switch can crack. When it does, the headlights or indicators can switch off by themselves, refuse to come on, or stay on. The fix was a free switch replacement at Mitsubishi dealers. Recall lists cover cars sold new in Australia, so for an NZ-new or imported car ask a franchise dealer to check the VIN.

What you would notice

  • Headlights flicker or switch off while driving
  • Indicators do not work or keep flashing
  • Lights only work with the stalk held in one spot

How to check it

Where to look. Steering column, light and indicator stalk

Ask the seller for the recall completion record or a dealer service invoice showing the recall work. Type the VIN into the manufacturer recall check or the Australian vehicle recall site on your phone while standing at the car. Work every position of the light stalk: parkers, low beam, high beam, flash, and both indicators, and wiggle the stalk gently in each position while someone watches the lights. If a workshop inspection is possible: have the combination switch checked or replaced under the recall.

What it costs to put right

$0 to $600 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the lighting switch recall been done?”
  • “Have the lights or indicators ever cut out?”

Now check the Mitsubishi Grandis you are actually looking at

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.
