Nissan Cube: CR14DE / HR15DE Timing Chain Stretch

CR14DE / HR15DE Timing Chain Stretch is a common engine fault on the Nissan Cube on the 2002–2019 cars, and we rate it critical. Putting it right costs $850 to $2,800 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 17 documented faults on the Nissan Cube.

What goes wrong

Both the Z11 Cube (CR14DE 1.4-litre) and Z12 Cube (HR15DE 1.5-litre) share the same family of timing chains prone to stretch with age and infrequent oil changes. The issue is structurally identical to the fault documented on Micra, Note, Tiida and Juke platforms. In NZ, Cubes are predominantly JDM imports with variable service history, and chain rattle on cold start is frequently present at the time of purchase. Left unattended, chain skip causes valve damage and engine replacement.

What you would notice

  • Metallic rattling or ticking from engine on cold start
  • Noise clears after 10–30 seconds as oil pressure builds
  • Check engine light with timing or camshaft codes
  • Rough cold idle that settles after warm-up
  • In severe cases misfire or engine knock

How to check it

Where to look. Front of engine on both CR14DE and HR15DE, behind timing cover

  1. Cold-start test is essential — listen from outside the vehicle at the front-right of the engine for chain rattle.

  2. Pull the oil filler cap and check for sludge indicating poor oil maintenance.

  3. Scan for P0011, P0014 or similar codes.

  4. Ask if chain has been proactively replaced.

What it costs to put right

$850 to $2,800 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the timing chain been replaced, and do you have receipts?”
  • “Has the engine ever rattled on a cold start?”
  • “What was the oil change frequency and specification?”

Now check the Nissan Cube you are actually looking at

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Nissan Cube buyer questions

Is cr14de / hr15de timing chain stretch serious on a Nissan Cube?

We rate it critical and common on the Nissan Cube. Left unattended, chain skip causes valve damage and engine replacement.

How much does it cost to fix on a Nissan Cube?

$850 to $2,800 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Nissan Cube years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2002–2019 Nissan Cube. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

Cold-start test is essential — listen from outside the vehicle at the front-right of the engine for chain rattle. Pull the oil filler cap and check for sludge indicating poor oil maintenance. Scan for P0011, P0014 or similar codes. Ask if chain has been proactively replaced. Look here: Front of engine on both CR14DE and HR15DE, behind timing cover
