Suzuki Jimny: Premature Wheel Bearing Failure (Rear Axle)

Premature Wheel Bearing Failure (Rear Axle) is a common suspension fault on the Suzuki Jimny on the 2020–2024 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $350 to $800 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 27 documented faults on the Suzuki Jimny.

What you are looking at

No photograph available

We do not hold a verified photograph of the Wheel bearing yet. We would rather show none than show a picture of a different part.

What goes wrong

Wheel bearing noise and failure is a documented pattern on JB74W models from approximately 2020 onwards, with forum communities noting higher incidence than earlier Jimny generations. Contributing factors include heavy 4WD use with mud and water immersion, fitment of larger-diameter or heavier alloy wheels with increased offset, and the inherent load on the compact hub design. Rear axle bearings are particularly affected. Suzuki issued a related recall in Japan for an axle assembly glitch on 31,744 vehicles. Continued operation with a worn bearing risks ABS sensor damage and, ultimately, wheel detachment.

What you would notice

  • Low-frequency humming or growling noise that increases with vehicle speed
  • Noise changes pitch or volume when the vehicle is steered left or right
  • Vibration felt through the seat or floor at speed
  • ABS warning light illuminated due to damaged sensor caused by bearing play
  • Wheel with measurable end float or rocking movement when tested off the ground

How to check it

Where to look. Rear wheel hubs / axle bearings; front hub bearings also affected

At low speed with windows down, listen for a humming or growling noise that changes pitch with vehicle speed or turns. Inspect the ABS reluctor ring on the hub for damage. If a workshop inspection is possible: Jack up each corner and check for bearing play by grasping the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and attempting to rock it — any movement indicates bearing wear. For rear axles, remove the brake drum and measure axle end float with a dial gauge; more than 0.8 mm indicates replacement is needed.

Parts involved: Wheel bearing.

What it costs to put right

$350 to $800 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Have any wheel bearings been replaced, and on which corners?”
  • “Are non-standard wheels fitted — larger diameter, heavier, or with more offset than factory?”
  • “Has the vehicle been driven through deep water crossings or heavy mud regularly?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Suzuki Jimny buyer questions

Is premature wheel bearing failure (rear axle) serious on a Suzuki Jimny?

We rate it major and common on the Suzuki Jimny.

How much does it cost to fix on a Suzuki Jimny?

$350 to $800 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Suzuki Jimny years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2020–2024 Suzuki Jimny. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?
