01Mild Hybrid 48V Lithium Battery Cell Imbalance
MajorOccasionalElectrical $1,200–$4,000 to fix
The MJ55S Spacia mild hybrid uses a 48V lithium-ion battery for the belt-integrated starter generator. Individual cell voltage imbalance degrades overall battery capacity and can trigger hybrid system warnings, reducing fuel economy as the combustion engine compensates for reduced electric assist.
Symptoms to notice
Mild hybrid system warning light on instrument cluster with reduced fuel economy
Reduced electric motor assist causing more frequent combustion engine operation on urban trips
What to check
Connect a Suzuki-compatible scanner and check for P1B00-series hybrid battery codes. Note fuel economy — significant decline from the rated figure indicates reduced hybrid assist. Ask if the mild hybrid warning has ever illuminated.
Where to look: 48V mild hybrid lithium battery under rear seat or boot floor
Ask the seller
“Has the mild hybrid 48v lithium been inspected or repaired?”
02R06A timing-chain / tensioner cold-start rattle
MinorCommonEngine $350–$2,200 to fix
The Spacia's 0.66-litre R06A three-cylinder (both naturally aspirated and turbo) uses a timing chain, and a common trait across R06A-engined Suzuki kei cars is a light metallic rattle for a second or two on a cold start. This comes from the chain tensioner relying on oil pressure to take up slack: as the tensioner ages or gets restricted by deposits, and as the chain stretches with mileage, the start-up rattle grows and can persist. Neglected oil changes accelerate it. A separate but related R06A weakness is a deeper knocking noise from thrust-bearing / crankshaft wear after repeated cold high-load running; Suzuki addressed that on several R06A models via a service campaign and warranty extension, but the Spacia was not clearly named in that campaign, so on an imported Spacia any engine-noise repair should be treated as an owner cost unless documented. A brief cold rattle that clears quickly is usually just the tensioner; a rattle that stays in, or any knock under load, points to chain stretch or bearing wear and a much bigger bill.
Symptoms to notice
Metallic rattle for a second or two on cold start-up
Rattle that no longer clears once warm as mileage climbs
Deeper knocking under load (worse case, bearing/chain wear)
Rougher idle or noise after skipped oil changes
What to check
Start the engine stone cold and listen for a rattle that persists beyond a couple of seconds, then listen again warm and under light load for any knock or continued chain noise. Check oil level and condition and ask for the service/oil-change history; on turbo cars confirm the oil has been changed on a short interval. Persistent noise warrants a compression/timing inspection before purchase.
Where to look: Timing chain, tensioner and guides at the front of the R06A engine (timing cover end)
Ask the seller
“Does it rattle on a cold start, and does the noise clear once warm?”
“How often has the oil been changed, and with what grade?”
“Has the timing chain, tensioner or any engine internals ever been done?”
“Is there any engine-noise or warranty-campaign history on this car?”

Like any used car, it depends on the specific example and its service history. Across the 10 documented faults for the Suzuki Spacia, the recurring problem areas are electrical, transmission, and fluid leaks. A Suzuki Spacia with a full service history and no signs of the issues listed on this page can be a sound buy but each one needs to be checked individually before you commit.
What are the most common problems with a used Suzuki Spacia?
+
We've catalogued 10 known faults for the Suzuki Spacia, covering electrical, transmission, and fluid leaks. Two are written out in full on this page. The rest — with the symptoms to notice, what to inspect, and typical repair costs for each — are free once you create an account.
How much do repairs cost on a Suzuki Spacia?
+
Most single repairs on the Suzuki Spacia fall between $400–$2,000 at NZ independent-workshop rates. Some of the 10 documented faults cost less and a few cost considerably more, and no one car needs them all. Knowing which ones to look for before you view is what lets you negotiate the price down or walk away.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a Suzuki Spacia?
+
Yes. A Suzuki Spacia inspection focused on its known weak points is the single best way to avoid an expensive mistake. KickTyres gives you a guided, model-specific inspection plus a market valuation and negotiation figure for $17.90 far less than the cost of missing one of the faults on this page.
