01K3-VE 1.3L piston ring wear causing high oil consumption
MajorCommonEngine $2,800–$5,500 to fix
The K3-VE 1.3L four-cylinder petrol engine fitted to the Avanza F650 and F600 uses a relatively narrow bore with thin piston rings optimised for fuel economy. Above 150,000 km, the piston ring lands develop step wear and the rings lose tension, allowing combustion blowby and oil migration past the rings into the combustion chamber. Consumption exceeding 1 litre per 1,000 km is documented on high-mileage examples. The failure is progressive; affected engines show persistent blue-grey smoke on startup and under sustained load, and oil level can drop to dangerously low levels between service intervals if not monitored. Continued use with worn rings washes cylinder walls with fuel, scoring the bores and making a simple ring replacement unviable.
Symptoms to notice
Blue-grey smoke from exhaust on cold start, clearing partially when warm
Oil consumption greater than 1 litre per 2,000 km
Fouled or oil-wet spark plugs on visual inspection
Slightly low compression on cylinder leakdown test compared to new spec
What to check
Check oil dipstick against service records to estimate consumption rate. Start from cold and observe exhaust for blue smoke. Remove one spark plug and inspect tip for black oily fouling. Ask for proof of oil top-up intervals between services. If a workshop inspection is possible: Perform a cylinder compression test and leakdown test; K3-VE new spec is approximately 1,270 kPa per cylinder.
Where to look: Internal engine – piston rings are inside each cylinder bore of the K3-VE block
Ask the seller
“How often does the engine need an oil top-up between services?”
“Has a compression or leakdown test been done recently?”
“Has the engine ever been rebuilt or had rings replaced?”
02Lower panel and door bottom rust on imports
MinorOccasionalBody & Rust $250–$1,500 to fix
Avanza imports rust in the lower doors, sills and rear quarters where drain holes block and moisture sits, a common WOF issue on older Indonesian/Japanese-import examples in NZ.
Symptoms to notice
Bubbling paint on door bottoms
Rust at sills and rear quarters
Blocked door drain holes
Corrosion under trim
What to check
Check door bottoms and drain holes, probe sills and rear quarters for soft metal, and inspect underbody.
Where to look: Lower doors, sills, rear quarters
Ask the seller
“Any rust repairs done?”
“Are the door drains clear?”
“Is it a fresh import?”

Across the 7 documented faults for the Toyota Avanza, the recurring problem areas are engine, suspension, and body & rust. A Toyota Avanza with a full service history and no signs of the issues listed on this page can be a sound buy but each one needs to be checked individually before you commit.
