Toyota Estima: 2AZ-FE Cylinder Head Bolt Thread Pull-Out

2AZ-FE Cylinder Head Bolt Thread Pull-Out is a very common engine fault on the Toyota Estima on the 2006–2014 cars, and we rate it critical. Putting it right costs $2,500 to $6,500 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 38 documented faults on the Toyota Estima.

What goes wrong

The aluminum cylinder block threads strip around the steel head bolts due to differential thermal expansion between the steel fasteners and the soft alloy block. The failure is concentrated at the thinnest section of the block deck near the coolant passages. Toyota documented this in TSB T-SB-0015-11 (March 2011), mandating Time-Sert thread insert repairs. Failure leads to loss of head clamping force, coolant escaping past the head gasket, rapid overheating, and potential engine destruction if driven after warning lights appear.

What you would notice

  • Coolant loss with no visible external leak, requiring frequent top-ups
  • Engine temperature gauge rising into red after moderate driving
  • White sweet-smelling exhaust smoke persistent at operating temperature
  • Milky brown residue on underside of oil filler cap
  • Check Engine light combined with coolant temperature warning

How to check it

Where to look. Cylinder block, aluminium thread bores beneath all 10 head bolt positions on the 2.4-litre inline-four

  1. Check coolant reservoir for brown discolouration or oily film (sign of combustion gas ingress).

  2. Inspect underside of oil filler cap for mayonnaise-like emulsion.

  3. Ask for service history confirming Time-Sert repair or short-block replacement.

  4. Cold-start check for white steam from exhaust that persists beyond 2 minutes.

  5. If a workshop inspection is possible: Compression test across all cylinders to identify any cylinder losing pressure.

Parts involved: Cylinder head.

What it costs to put right

$2,500 to $6,500 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the engine ever been diagnosed with a head bolt thread failure, and has a Time-Sert repair or short-block replacement been carried out?”
  • “Has the vehicle ever overheated, and is there a coolant service history showing the system has been flushed and pressure-tested?”
  • “Is there any record of a head gasket replacement on this engine?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Toyota Estima buyer questions

Is 2az-fe cylinder head bolt thread pull-out serious on a Toyota Estima?

We rate it critical and very common on the Toyota Estima.

How much does it cost to fix on a Toyota Estima?

$2,500 to $6,500 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Toyota Estima years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2006–2014 Toyota Estima. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

Check coolant reservoir for brown discolouration or oily film (sign of combustion gas ingress). Inspect underside of oil filler cap for mayonnaise-like emulsion. Ask for service history confirming Time-Sert repair or short-block replacement. Cold-start check for white steam from exhaust that persists beyond 2 minutes.
