Toyota Land Cruiser: Rear brake caliper slide pin seizure (80 Series J80 and 100 Series)
Rear brake caliper slide pin seizure (80 Series J80 and 100 Series) is a very common brakes fault on the Toyota Land Cruiser on the 1990–2007 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $250 to $750 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 46 documented faults on the Toyota Land Cruiser.

What goes wrong
The rear brake calipers on the 80 Series and 100 Series are a sliding (floating) design that relies on two slider pins in rubber boots; the front calipers are fixed four-piston units and do not use guide pins. The guide pin boots perish with age and allow water, road salt, and mud to contaminate and wash out the grease, causing the pins to corrode and seize within their bores. A seized guide pin prevents the caliper from retracting after brake release, causing continuous pad drag on the disc, heat build-up, accelerated pad and rotor wear on one side, and in severe cases brake fluid boiling or a stuck brake.
What you would notice
- Vehicle pulling to one side under braking, caused by unequal braking force from a dragging caliper on one side
- One wheel significantly hotter than the opposite side after a normal drive, indicating continuous caliper drag
- Uneven brake pad wear with the inner or outer pad substantially thinner than its counterpart on the same corner
How to check it
Where to look. Front and rear brake caliper guide pin bores, particularly rear calipers on both 80 and 100 Series
After a normal drive, carefully place a hand near each wheel centre (not touching the disc) to compare temperatures — a seized caliper will produce significantly more heat on the affected wheel. Inspect the guide pin rubber boots for cracking, tears, or collapse. Look for uneven pad thickness between inner and outer pads, and scoring on one face of the brake disc. If a workshop inspection is possible: Remove the caliper and attempt to slide each guide pin by hand; it should move smoothly with finger pressure.
What it costs to put right
$250 to $750 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “When were the brake calipers last serviced, including guide pin cleaning and re-greasing?”
- “Has the vehicle ever pulled to one side under braking?”
- “Have the brake pads worn unevenly or needed replacing at different intervals on each side?”

What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. Toyota Land Cruiser buyer questions
Is rear brake caliper slide pin seizure (80 series j80 and 100 series) serious on a Toyota Land Cruiser?
We rate it major and very common on the Toyota Land Cruiser. How much does it cost to fix on a Toyota Land Cruiser?
$250 to $750 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.
Which Toyota Land Cruiser years are affected?
Our research records this fault on the 1990–2007 Toyota Land Cruiser. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
