Toyota Prado: 1KD-FTV Crankshaft Damper Pulley Rubber Separation (3.0L D-4D)

1KD-FTV Crankshaft Damper Pulley Rubber Separation (3.0L D-4D) is a common engine fault on the Toyota Prado on the 2002–2009 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $500 to $1,400 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 64 documented faults on the Toyota Prado.

What you are looking at

No photograph available

We do not hold a verified photograph of the Shock absorber / strut yet. We would rather show none than show a picture of a different part.

What goes wrong

The harmonic balancer on the 1KD-FTV uses a rubber-bonded insert between the inner hub and outer ring to absorb crankshaft vibration. Age and heat cycling cause this rubber element to debond or tear, allowing the outer ring to slip relative to the inner hub or separate entirely. When the outer ring moves, auxiliary belt alignment is lost, causing belt squeal, accessory failure, and in severe cases complete serpentine belt loss. The failure can occur without warning and can damage the power steering pump, alternator, and air conditioning compressor. Toyota dealers in Australia documented this through service records from approximately 2012 onwards on higher-mileage KDJ120 vehicles.

What you would notice

  • Intermittent belt squealing at idle or under electrical or steering load
  • Visible runout or wobble on the crankshaft pulley face with engine running
  • Serpentine belt tracking off-centre or derailing from a pulley
  • Sudden loss of power steering assist or alternator charging
  • New engine vibration not previously present

How to check it

Where to look. Front of the engine — crankshaft nose, below the timing cover

With the engine off and on a flat surface, grip the outer rim of the crankshaft pulley and attempt to rotate and rock it relative to the inner hub — any rotational play or lateral movement indicates rubber separation. With the engine running at idle, use a torch and mirror to look for pulley face wobble. Inspect the serpentine belt edges for uneven or angled wear.

Parts involved: Shock absorber / strut.

What it costs to put right

$500 to $1,400 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the crankshaft damper pulley ever been replaced?”
  • “Is there any belt noise at idle or on start-up?”
  • “Are all accessories including power steering, alternator, and air conditioning functioning correctly?”

Now check the Toyota Prado you are actually looking at

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Toyota Prado buyer questions

Is 1kd-ftv crankshaft damper pulley rubber separation (3.0l d-4d) serious on a Toyota Prado?

We rate it major and common on the Toyota Prado.

How much does it cost to fix on a Toyota Prado?

$500 to $1,400 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Toyota Prado years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2002–2009 Toyota Prado. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

With the engine off and on a flat surface, grip the outer rim of the crankshaft pulley and attempt to rotate and rock it relative to the inner hub — any rotational play or lateral movement indicates rubber separation. With the engine running at idle, use a torch and mirror to look for pulley face wobble. Inspect the serpentine belt edges for uneven or angled wear.
