Early BWA and AXX 2.0TSI engines use a Bosch high-pressure fuel pump driven directly off the camshaft via a roller follower. The cam lobe and roller wear rapidly, generating fine metal particles that contaminate the entire high-pressure fuel circuit including injectors, fuel rail pressure regulator, and high-pressure lines. Once contamination occurs the fuel injectors cannot be saved by flushing alone and require replacement. VW released a revised pump design with a larger roller follower and extended the warranty in some markets but did not issue a universal recall in NZ or AU.

All 2.0TSI engines from the BWA and AXX through to the CCZB and CDLF use gasoline direct injection where fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinder rather than past the intake valves. Without fuel washing the valve stems and faces, oil vapour from the positive crankcase ventilation system deposits as carbon on the back of the intake valves. By 80,000 to 120,000 km the deposits become thick enough to disrupt airflow into the cylinder, causing rough idle, hesitation, and power loss. Cylinder two and three are typically worst affected due to PCV vapour flow patterns.
