01DETA 2.0 TDI Timing Chain Tensioner and Guide Rail Failure
CriticalOccasionalEngine $900–$16,000 to fix
The DETA engine uses a hydraulic timing chain tensioner that relies on adequate oil pressure at startup to maintain chain tension. Cold starts and extended oil change intervals cause the tensioner to lag, allowing the chain to slap the plastic guide rails. The rails fatigue and shed debris into the sump, and in the worst cases the chain skips a tooth on the camshaft sprocket, causing immediate valve-to-piston contact and catastrophic engine failure.
Symptoms to notice
Metallic rattling or slapping noise on cold start that disappears within 3–5 seconds
Check engine light with camshaft position correlation faults (P0016, P0017)
Rough idle or misfires after a cold start
Loss of power accompanied by oil pressure warning
Sudden catastrophic engine seizure in severe cases of chain jump
What to check
Listen carefully for a metallic rattling or slapping noise in the first 2–3 seconds of a cold start before the tensioner pressurises — this is the critical warning sign. Check the ECU for stored cam timing correlation codes (P0016, P0017, P0341). If a workshop inspection is possible: Drain a small oil sample and inspect for fine metallic particles or plastic fragments.
Where to look: Front of engine behind the timing cover — chain, tensioner, and upper/lower plastic guide rails
Ask the seller
“Has the car ever exhibited a cold-start rattle or knocking noise from the engine?”
“Has the timing chain, tensioner, or guide rails ever been inspected or replaced?”
“Were oil changes carried out strictly within the manufacturer's recommended interval, and with the correct specification oil?”
02DL382 7-speed S tronic low-speed shunt and clutch shudder (B9)
MinorOccasionalTransmission $400–$4,000 to fix
The B9's DL382 wet-clutch S tronic is more reliable than the old DL501 but is widely reported to shunt and hesitate in stop-start traffic, with some cars developing clutch shudder and a few needing mechatronic work. Software updates improved calibration. Mostly a refinement complaint, but genuine shudder on take-off means clutch work.
Symptoms to notice
Jerky low-speed take-up
Shudder on light-throttle hill starts
Delayed engagement from park
What to check
Creep in traffic and do slow uphill starts on the test drive. Ask if gearbox software updates have been applied and when the S tronic oil was last serviced (60,000 km).
Where to look: Transmission
Ask the seller
“Has the gearbox software been updated?”
“Any shudder pulling away when warm?”

Like any used car, it depends on the specific example and its service history. Across the 38 documented faults for the Audi A4, the recurring problem areas are engine, transmission, and cooling. A Audi A4 with a full service history and no signs of the issues listed on this page can be a sound buy but each one needs to be checked individually before you commit.
What are the most common problems with a used Audi A4?
+
We've catalogued 38 known faults for the Audi A4, covering engine, transmission, and cooling. Two are written out in full on this page. The rest — with the symptoms to notice, what to inspect, and typical repair costs for each — are free once you create an account.
How much do repairs cost on a Audi A4?
+
Most single repairs on the Audi A4 fall between $800–$5,000 at NZ independent-workshop rates. Some of the 38 documented faults cost less and a few cost considerably more, and no one car needs them all. Knowing which ones to look for before you view is what lets you negotiate the price down or walk away.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a Audi A4?
+
Yes. A Audi A4 inspection focused on its known weak points is the single best way to avoid an expensive mistake. KickTyres gives you a guided, model-specific inspection plus a market valuation and negotiation figure for $17.90 far less than the cost of missing one of the faults on this page.
