Ford Mondeo: PowerShift 6DCT450 dual-clutch judder, shift shock and mechatronic faults

PowerShift 6DCT450 dual-clutch judder, shift shock and mechatronic faults is a common transmission fault on the Ford Mondeo on the 2010–2020 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $1,500 to $5,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 15 documented faults on the Ford Mondeo.

What you are looking at

No photograph available

We do not hold a verified photograph of the Mechatronic / valve body or Clutch yet. We would rather show none than show a picture of a different part.

What goes wrong

Turbo-petrol and diesel Mondeos fitted with the automatic use Ford's PowerShift, a 6-speed dual-clutch (the 6DCT450 wet-clutch unit). It behaves like a manual with two computer-operated clutches, so at low speed it can shudder, jerk, hesitate on take-off or bang into gear rather than gliding like a normal torque-converter auto. The wet-clutch 6DCT450 is far more durable than the dry-clutch version used in the smaller Fiesta/Focus, but it still suffers clutch wear, solenoid and mechatronic (control unit) faults, especially where the recommended fluid change was skipped. A worn clutch or failed mechatronic can run into four figures.

What you would notice

  • Shudder or vibration pulling away from a standstill
  • Jerky, hesitant or delayed gear changes at low speed
  • Clunk or thump when it selects a gear
  • Transmission warning light or 'transmission fault' message

How to check it

Where to look. Transaxle bolted to the engine, front of the car; the mechatronic control unit is inside the gearbox

On the test drive, do lots of slow-speed stop-start driving (car parks, give-way lines), not just open road, and feel for shuddering as it takes off and hesitation between gears. A smooth cruise hides this fault. Ask for a receipt showing the transmission oil and filter were changed on schedule (roughly every 60,000km). Have any stored transmission codes scanned before you buy.

Parts involved: Mechatronic / valve body, Clutch.

What it costs to put right

$1,500 to $5,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Is this the PowerShift automatic, and has the transmission oil and filter ever been changed?”
  • “Has the clutch pack or mechatronic unit ever been replaced?”
  • “Does it ever shudder or hesitate pulling away?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Ford Mondeo buyer questions

Is powershift 6dct450 dual-clutch judder, shift shock and mechatronic faults serious on a Ford Mondeo?

We rate it major and common on the Ford Mondeo. A worn clutch or failed mechatronic can run into four figures.

How much does it cost to fix on a Ford Mondeo?

$1,500 to $5,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Ford Mondeo years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2010–2020 Ford Mondeo. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

On the test drive, do lots of slow-speed stop-start driving (car parks, give-way lines), not just open road, and feel for shuddering as it takes off and hesitation between gears.
