Honda CR-V: K24A Balance Shaft Oil Pump Failure
K24A Balance Shaft Oil Pump Failure is a common engine fault on the Honda CR-V on the 2001–2012 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $950 to $2,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 59 documented faults on the Honda CR-V.

What goes wrong
The K24A engine incorporates a balance shaft module bolted to the underside of the block, driven by a chain off the crankshaft, and containing its own dedicated oil pump that feeds lubricant to the balance shaft bearings at high pressure. The pump uses closely toleranced aluminium gears that are susceptible to accelerated wear when engine oil is not changed within Honda's specified interval, causing the internal gear clearances to open and oil delivery pressure to drop below the minimum required. Failure of the balance shaft oil pump can escalate to the balance shafts seizing within their housing, creating severe vibration and the risk of the balance shaft chain breaking and causing wider engine damage.
What you would notice
- Persistent vibration through the floor and steering wheel at idle that increases between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm
- Oil pressure gauge reading below normal or low-oil-pressure warning light at warm idle
- Abnormal engine knock or whine from the lower block accompanied by metallic contamination in drained engine oil
How to check it
Where to look. Lower engine block, balance shaft module on the sump-side face of the block below the crankshaft
With the engine at operating temperature, check oil pressure at the balance shaft circuit test port; compare against Honda K24A specification.
Drain and inspect oil for aluminium filings.
Listen for a high-frequency whirring or grinding from the lower block at idle that changes with engine speed.
What it costs to put right
$950 to $2,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “Has the balance shaft module or its oil pump been replaced under any service or warranty work?”
- “What is the documented oil change history and has synthetic oil of the correct grade been used throughout?”
- “Has there been any oil pressure warning or unexplained vibration complaint?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. Honda CR-V buyer questions
Is k24a balance shaft oil pump failure serious on a Honda CR-V?
We rate it major and common on the Honda CR-V.
How much does it cost to fix on a Honda CR-V?
$950 to $2,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.
Which Honda CR-V years are affected?
Our research records this fault on the 2001–2012 Honda CR-V. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
How do I check for it before I buy?
With the engine at operating temperature, check oil pressure at the balance shaft circuit test port; compare against Honda K24A specification. Drain and inspect oil for aluminium filings. Listen for a high-frequency whirring or grinding from the lower block at idle that changes with engine speed.
