Honda Mobilio: L15A timing chain tensioner bleed-down rattle

L15A timing chain tensioner bleed-down rattle is a very common engine fault on the Honda Mobilio on the 2001–2008 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $450 to $1,050 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 11 documented faults on the Honda Mobilio.

What goes wrong

The Honda Mobilio GB1 shares the same L15A 1.5L i-VTEC engine as the first-generation Freed and suffers an identical timing chain tensioner check-valve degradation fault. In imported examples now 16–24 years old, the tensioner check valve O-ring has often hardened and shrunk, allowing rapid oil drain-back after shutdown. Cold-start rattle is near-universal on high-mileage Mobilio GB1 units unless the tensioner has been proactively replaced. At this vehicle age, the plastic timing chain guide rails are also subject to brittleness from heat cycling and should be inspected simultaneously. Chain stretch from tensioner slack compounds wear on the VTC actuator sprocket.

What you would notice

  • Persistent cold-start metallic rattle from front of engine, often lasting longer than on younger vehicles
  • Rattle may partially persist at idle on very high mileage units
  • Oil pressure warning light flickering on start in extreme cases of severe oil drain-back
  • Cam timing codes if tensioner slack is excessive

How to check it

Where to look. Front-right of L15A engine block, timing chain upper guide rail and tensioner body

On any GB1 Mobilio over 150,000 km treat tensioner replacement as a maintenance item. Start cold and time the rattle duration — more than 10 seconds suggests significant tensioner wear. Verify oil is correct specification and recently changed. If a workshop inspection is possible: Pull the valve cover breather hose and use a borescope or inspection mirror to check guide rail condition for white chalky cracking.

Parts involved: Timing chain.

What it costs to put right

$450 to $1,050 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the timing chain tensioner and guide rails been inspected given the vehicle age?”
  • “Is there any cold-start rattle, even briefly?”
  • “What is the full service history and mileage since new?”

Now check the Honda Mobilio you are actually looking at

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Honda Mobilio buyer questions

Is l15a timing chain tensioner bleed-down rattle serious on a Honda Mobilio?

We rate it major and very common on the Honda Mobilio. At this vehicle age, the plastic timing chain guide rails are also subject to brittleness from heat cycling and should be inspected simultaneously. Chain stretch from tensioner slack compounds wear on the VTC actuator sprocket.

How much does it cost to fix on a Honda Mobilio?

$450 to $1,050 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Honda Mobilio years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2001–2008 Honda Mobilio. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
