Kia Carnival: 8-Speed Automatic Torque Converter Lock-up Clutch Shudder

8-Speed Automatic Torque Converter Lock-up Clutch Shudder is a common transmission fault on the Kia Carnival on the 2015–2023 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $350 to $4,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 17 documented faults on the Kia Carnival.

What goes wrong

The Hyundai/Kia A8LR1 and A8TR1 8-speed automatic transmissions use a multi-plate wet torque converter clutch that engages at light throttle from approximately 40–90 km/h. Friction material in the lock-up clutch glazes over time — particularly with extended service intervals or the incorrect ATF specification — producing a characteristic resonant shudder felt through the floor and driveline. Kia issued a service campaign and revised ATF specification (SP-IV RR) as the primary fix, but shudder can return if the underlying clutch pack is worn.

What you would notice

  • Rhythmic shudder through floor and steering wheel at 40–90 km/h under light throttle
  • Vibration disappears when accelerating harder or lifting off throttle completely
  • Transmission hesitation or hunt between 7th and 8th gear at highway speeds
  • Fluid burned or darkened at the transmission dipstick or service plug
  • DTC P0740 (torque converter clutch circuit malfunction) in some advanced cases

How to check it

Where to look. Transmission — torque converter, accessible from underneath

During a test drive, hold steady light throttle at 50–70 km/h on a flat road; a shudder or vibration resonating through the seat and floor indicates a glazed torque converter clutch. Ask whether the ATF has been changed to SP-IV RR spec as per the Kia service campaign.

What it costs to put right

$350 to $4,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the transmission fluid ever been changed, and was SP-IV RR specification ATF used?”
  • “Have you noticed any shudder or vibration when cruising at light throttle around 60–80 km/h?”
  • “Has any dealer carried out a service campaign or bulletin related to the transmission?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Kia Carnival buyer questions

Is 8-speed automatic torque converter lock-up clutch shudder serious on a Kia Carnival?

We rate it major and common on the Kia Carnival. How much does it cost to fix on a Kia Carnival?

$350 to $4,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Kia Carnival years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2015–2023 Kia Carnival. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

During a test drive, hold steady light throttle at 50–70 km/h on a flat road; a shudder or vibration resonating through the seat and floor indicates a glazed torque converter clutch.
