Kia Carnival: R2.2 CRDi Injector Copper O-ring Failure — Diesel Fuel in Oil

R2.2 CRDi Injector Copper O-ring Failure — Diesel Fuel in Oil is a common engine fault on the Kia Carnival on the 2015–2022 cars, and we rate it critical. Putting it right costs $900 to $3,500 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 17 documented faults on the Kia Carnival.

What goes wrong

The high-pressure fuel injectors in the 2.2L CRDi engine seat against the cylinder head via copper O-rings and sealing washers. These degrade over time, allowing diesel fuel to bypass the seal and drain into the engine sump. Oil dilution as low as 5–8% destroys bearing film strength and accelerates crankshaft and main bearing wear; many owners discover the problem only when oil level rises abnormally or a dipstick smells of diesel.

What you would notice

  • Engine oil level rising above the maximum mark between services
  • Dipstick oil smells strongly of diesel fuel
  • White or grey smoke on startup as diluted oil burns off
  • Premature engine bearing noise (rumble at idle) on high-mileage examples
  • Check engine light with injector quantity or rail pressure codes (P0087, P0093)

How to check it

Where to look. Top of engine — injector seats at cylinder head, sump oil

Pull the dipstick and smell the oil — diesel contamination has a distinct fuel odour and raises the oil level above max. Check service history for unusually frequent oil changes or engine flush entries, which can indicate the owner was managing a known dilution problem.

Parts involved: Fuel injector.

What it costs to put right

$900 to $3,500 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the diesel particulate filter or injector seals ever been replaced, and do you have receipts?”
  • “When was the last oil change and what was the mileage interval — was there any evidence of oil dilution?”
  • “Has the oil ever risen above the max mark or smelled of fuel between services?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Kia Carnival buyer questions

Is r2.2 crdi injector copper o-ring failure — diesel fuel in oil serious on a Kia Carnival?

We rate it critical and common on the Kia Carnival.

How much does it cost to fix on a Kia Carnival?

$900 to $3,500 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Kia Carnival years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2015–2022 Kia Carnival. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

Pull the dipstick and smell the oil — diesel contamination has a distinct fuel odour and raises the oil level above max.
