Known Kia Niro faults
Every fault below is documented specifically for this model — researched and verified before it’s published.
CriticalOccasionalTransmission $5,000–$15,000 to fix
First-generation Niro EVs (e-Niro) have a well-documented reduction gear fault: a high-pitched whine or hum that rises and falls with road speed, usually first heard around 40-70 km/h and slowly getting louder over thousands of kilometres. Kia issued TSB #234 for abnormal reduction gear noise. Left alone it can progress to grinding and require replacement of the reduction gear or the whole drive unit - a very expensive job once the 7-year warranty has lapsed, and Kia has declined goodwill for some second owners.
Symptoms to notice
High-pitched whine that changes with road speed, not motor load
Hum or grinding from the front of the car
Noise present coasting in neutral as well as under power
What to check
Test drive on a quiet road with the radio off, windows up. Accelerate to 100 km/h and lift off - a speed-related whine that persists while coasting points to the reduction gear, not tyre noise. Check remaining Kia warranty (7 yr/160,000 km NZ) and whether TSB #234 work was ever done.
Where to look: Reduction gear / drive unit between the electric motor and front axle
Ask the seller
“Is there any driveline whine at speed?”
“Has the reduction gear or drive unit ever been replaced under warranty?”
“How much factory warranty remains, and does it transfer?”
0212V auxiliary battery drain and premature failure
MinorCommonElectrical $250–$600 to fix
All Niro variants (hybrid, PHEV and EV) rely on a small 12V auxiliary battery to boot the car, and it is a known weak point. Parasitic drains - Kia issued a TSB for 2018 PHEV rear door latches draining the battery when parked, and another recommending an IGPM software update - plus a small battery that lives a hard life mean many fail at 3-4 years. A flat 12V battery leaves the whole car dead even when the main hybrid/EV battery is fully charged.
Symptoms to notice
Car completely dead after sitting a few days
Slow boot-up, warning light Christmas tree on start
Ask when the 12V battery was last replaced and look for a date sticker on it (under the bonnet on hybrids, in the boot area on some EVs). Ask whether the car has ever failed to start after sitting. Check the service history for IGPM/door-latch software TSB work.
Where to look: 12V auxiliary battery in the engine bay (hybrid/PHEV) or accessible via boot/under-bonnet on EV
Ask the seller
“How old is the 12V battery?”
“Has the car ever gone flat while parked?”
“Were the battery-drain software updates (IGPM/door latch TSB) done?”

Like any used car, it depends on the specific example and its service history. Across the 12 documented faults for the Kia Niro, the recurring problem areas are transmission, electrical, and cooling. A Kia Niro with a full service history and no signs of the issues listed on this page can be a sound buy but each one needs to be checked individually before you commit.
What are the most common problems with a used Kia Niro?
+
We've catalogued 12 known faults for the Kia Niro, covering transmission, electrical, and cooling. Two are written out in full on this page. The rest — with the symptoms to notice, what to inspect, and typical repair costs for each — are free once you create an account.
How much do repairs cost on a Kia Niro?
+
Most single repairs on the Kia Niro fall between $900–$4,500 at NZ independent-workshop rates. Some of the 12 documented faults cost less and a few cost considerably more, and no one car needs them all. Knowing which ones to look for before you view is what lets you negotiate the price down or walk away.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a Kia Niro?
+
Yes. A Kia Niro inspection focused on its known weak points is the single best way to avoid an expensive mistake. KickTyres gives you a guided, model-specific inspection plus a market valuation and negotiation figure for $17.90 far less than the cost of missing one of the faults on this page.
