01TDV6 2.7 Oil Pump Drive Sprocket Failure
CriticalCommonEngine $2,500–$25,000 to fix
The 276DT 2.7 TDV6 engine uses a plastic-toothed sprocket to drive the oil pump off the crankshaft. The sprocket teeth strip or the sprocket body fractures under thermal cycling and chain load, immediately stopping oil pump drive. Oil pressure drops to zero within seconds and the engine suffers catastrophic bearing and bore damage before the oil pressure warning lamp can prompt driver response. The failure is most common between 80,000 and 150,000 km but can occur earlier with poor oil change intervals.
Symptoms to notice
Sudden oil pressure warning light illuminating at speed with no prior warning
Loud knocking or rattling from engine followed rapidly by seizure
Metal swarf or plastic fragments visible in drained engine oil
Engine cuts out under load with no restart possible
What to check
Remove sump and inspect oil pump drive sprocket for cracked or stripped teeth. Check for metal debris in sump. Inspect oil pump drive chain for elongation. Confirm oil service history is regular with correct viscosity oil.
Where to look: Front of engine block, oil pump drive chain assembly
Ask the seller
“Has the oil pump drive sprocket ever been inspected or replaced?”
“What is the oil service interval history and what oil viscosity has been used?”
“Has there ever been an oil pressure warning light event?”
“Has the sump ever been dropped for inspection?”
02InControl Touch Pro infotainment and electrical gremlins (D5)
MinorCommonElectrical $200–$1,500 to fix
Early Discovery 5s are known for software-related electrical faults: the InControl Touch Pro screen freezing or rebooting, reversing camera dropouts, phantom warning messages, keyless entry and powered tailgate glitches, and flat batteries from modules failing to sleep. Most are fixed by dealer software updates and battery replacement, but an un-updated car can be a constant irritation. JLR issued numerous software campaigns for these systems.
Symptoms to notice
Touchscreen freezing, rebooting or black screen
Random warning messages that clear on restart
Flat 12V battery after short layovers
Keyless entry or tailgate intermittently not responding
What to check
Test the full infotainment, camera, keyless entry and tailgate during the viewing. Ask when the car last had dealer software updates and whether the 12V battery has been replaced. A pre-purchase electronic scan for stored fault codes across modules is strongly recommended on any D5.
Where to look: Centre touchscreen, body control modules, 12V battery under the load floor
Ask the seller
“Is the software up to date — any outstanding JLR campaigns?”
“Any history of flat batteries or warning messages?”

Like any used car, it depends on the specific example and its service history. Across the 25 documented faults for the Land Rover Discovery, the recurring problem areas are engine, body & rust, and cooling. A Land Rover Discovery with a full service history and no signs of the issues listed on this page can be a sound buy but each one needs to be checked individually before you commit.
What are the most common problems with a used Land Rover Discovery?
+
We've catalogued 25 known faults for the Land Rover Discovery, covering engine, body & rust, and cooling. Two are written out in full on this page. The rest — with the symptoms to notice, what to inspect, and typical repair costs for each — are free once you create an account.
How much do repairs cost on a Land Rover Discovery?
+
Most single repairs on the Land Rover Discovery fall between $1,500–$3,500 at NZ independent-workshop rates.
