Known Mazda Biante faults
Every fault below is documented specifically for this model — researched and verified before it’s published.
The Mazda LF-VD 2.0-litre DOHC engine uses a single-row roller timing chain tensioned by a hydraulic tensioner and guided by two primary plastic-backed chain guides. The nylon contact surface on these guides degrades from heat cycling and oil degradation over approximately 120,000–180,000 km. As the guide wears thin the chain slack increases, producing a characteristic metallic rattling on cold start that diminishes once oil pressure builds within 3–8 seconds. Delayed oil changes accelerate wear. If left unaddressed the guide can shed fragments into the oil pan, causing pick-up tube blockage or accelerated cam-phaser wear.
Symptoms to notice
Cold-start metallic chain rattle from the front of the engine lasting 3–8 seconds then fading as oil pressure rises
Intermittent check-engine light with cam-timing or VVT phase error codes P0341 or P0011 in conjunction with the rattle, indicating chain stretch beyond the tensioner's compensation range
Oil that contains fine metallic debris or is darker than expected for its stated change interval
What to check
Start the engine cold from overnight and listen immediately for a metallic rattle from the front of the engine lasting more than two seconds before quietening. Request oil change history — if intervals exceed 10,000 km with semi-synthetic or any oil changes have been skipped this fault is more likely. A healthy engine should start silently or with only momentary tick.
Where to look: Timing chain cover at the front of the LF-VD engine block, upper and lower chain guide rails accessible only with timing cover removal
Ask the seller
“Has the engine ever rattled on cold start, even briefly?”
“Can you provide full oil-change history with dates and mileages confirming intervals under 10,000 km?”
“Has any timing chain, tensioner, or guide work been carried out?”
02Electric Power Steering Rack Rattle
MinorCommonElectrical $600–$2,200 to fix
EPS rack develops internal rattle at low speeds and over rough surfaces.
Symptoms to notice
Knocking or rattling from steering column area at low speeds over rough surfaces
Vibration felt in steering wheel during slow manoeuvring
What to check
Drive over speed humps with windows down and listen for rattle from steering column area.
Where to look: Electric power steering rack assembly
Ask the seller
“Has the electric power steering rack rattle been inspected or repaired?”
