Mazda CX-5: SkyActiv-D Injector Soot Deposit Build-Up

SkyActiv-D Injector Soot Deposit Build-Up is a common engine fault on the Mazda CX-5 on the 2012–2017 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $400 to $3,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 36 documented faults on the Mazda CX-5.

What goes wrong

The SkyActiv-D 2.2 uses piezoelectric common-rail injectors with very fine spray-hole geometry. Carbonaceous soot deposits accumulate on injector tips when combustion temperatures are repeatedly low, a direct consequence of short-trip or light-load driving patterns. Deposit build-up alters the spray pattern and atomisation quality, causing misfires, rough running, and increased exhaust smoke that worsens progressively unless the injectors are cleaned or replaced.

What you would notice

  • Rough, lumpy idle particularly when cold that may partially clear once warm
  • Visible black or grey smoke from the exhaust under light acceleration
  • Hesitation and stumble when pulling away from rest
  • Elevated idle speed hunting as the ECU attempts to compensate for uneven cylinder contribution

How to check it

Where to look. Top of the cylinder head, four injectors seated into the combustion chambers

  1. Perform an injector return-flow (back-leak) test to identify injectors with excessive leakage.

  2. Remove injectors and inspect tips under magnification for coking deposits.

  3. Check for fault codes P0200–P0204 (injector circuit) or misfire codes P030x.

What it costs to put right

$400 to $3,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the vehicle ever had the injectors cleaned or tested?”
  • “Does it smoke on start-up or under light throttle?”
  • “Are there any stored engine fault codes?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Mazda CX-5 buyer questions

Is skyactiv-d injector soot deposit build-up serious on a Mazda CX-5?

We rate it major and common on the Mazda CX-5.

How much does it cost to fix on a Mazda CX-5?

$400 to $3,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Mazda CX-5 years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2012–2017 Mazda CX-5. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

Perform an injector return-flow (back-leak) test to identify injectors with excessive leakage. Remove injectors and inspect tips under magnification for coking deposits. Check for fault codes P0200–P0204 (injector circuit) or misfire codes P030x. Look here: Top of the cylinder head, four injectors seated into the combustion chambers
