What a diesel injector repair costs in NZ, by model

168 documented diesel injector faults across 100 models. Half of them start at or below $800, and half top out at or below $3,500. Every fault below shows its own range, from the cheapest fix recorded to the worst case. Figures are approximate, at New Zealand independent workshop rates.

Modern diesels spray fuel through high-pressure injectors that are precise and expensive. They wear, stick or leak, and on some engines the seals under them fail and let combustion gas escape, known on some utes as "black death" from the tar it leaves around the injector.

What the price covers

Low figures are usually new seals or a single injector cleaned and tested. High figures are a full set of new injectors, sometimes with fuel pump or engine damage from a failure left too long.

How to check before you buy

Listen at idle for a ticking or chuffing sound from the top of the engine.
Look around the injectors for black, tar-like deposits.
Watch for rough idle, white or black smoke, and hard starting from cold.
Ask when the injectors or seals were last done, and for the invoice.
