01GG/GH Front Subframe and Lower Control Arm Mount Corrosion
MajorCommonBody & Rust $1,500–$5,000 to fix
The GG (2002-2007) and GH (2008-2012) Atenza front subframes are fabricated from mild steel with inadequate factory anti-corrosion treatment for markets with road salt or high humidity. The subframe main rails, rear mounting points, and lower control arm pivot brackets develop heavy surface corrosion that penetrates to structural steel. In advanced cases the control arm mounting points corrode through, causing looseness in the front suspension geometry and creating a dangerous MOT/WOF failure condition. This is a documented pattern in NZ Japanese imports.
Symptoms to notice
Orange rust scale visible on the front subframe crossmember from beneath the vehicle
Knocking or clunking from the front suspension over bumps caused by loose control arm pivots in corroded brackets
Failed NZTA WOF inspection for structural corrosion at the front subframe mounting points
Vague steering and increased understeer as geometry wanders from corroded pivot points
What to check
Probe the subframe rails and mounting flanges with a screwdriver — sound steel will resist, corroded sections will flex or crumble. Pay particular attention to where the rear subframe bolts pass through the body and to the control arm brackets. Check for orange rust scale falling from the subframe, and look at the inner sills above the subframe mounts for rust transfer. If a workshop inspection is possible: Place the vehicle on a hoist and inspect the front subframe with a torch.
Where to look: Front subframe crossmember, particularly rear subframe-to-body mounting points and lower control arm rear pivot brackets
Ask the seller
“Has the front subframe been inspected for corrosion by a workshop?”
“Has the car recently passed a WOF and did the inspector note any undercarriage rust?”
“Has the car spent time in regions with road salt or heavy coastal exposure?”
02Electric Power Steering Rack Rattle
MinorCommonElectrical $600–$2,200 to fix
EPS rack develops internal rattle at low speeds over rough surfaces.
Symptoms to notice
Knocking or rattling from steering rack at low speeds
Vibration through steering wheel during slow manoeuvring
What to check
Drive over rough surfaces at low speed and listen for rattle from the steering rack area.
Where to look: Electric power steering rack assembly
Ask the seller
“Has the electric power steering rack rattle been inspected or repaired?”
