011.2 DIG-T Timing Chain Guide Disintegration
CriticalCommonEngine $2,500–$14,000 to fix
The HRA2DDT 1.2-litre turbocharged engine (marketed as DIG-T) uses plastic timing chain guides that are undersized for the sustained heat cycling of a turbocharged application. The guides crack and shed fragments into the oil sump from as low as 60,000 km, and once the guide fails the timing chain loses lateral support and can derail, jump timing, or snap entirely. This is a terminal failure mode that typically destroys the cylinder head and sometimes the block, as piston-to-valve contact occurs at high speed.
Symptoms to notice
Rattling or slapping noise from the front of the engine, worse on cold start but sometimes persistent when warm
Plastic debris visible in drained oil or caught in cut-open oil filter element
Check engine light with camshaft/crankshaft correlation codes (P0016, P0017)
Sudden catastrophic engine noise followed by loss of power — chain derailment event
Engine stall at speed with no warning, not restarting
What to check
Cold-start and listen carefully for any chain rattle or ticking from the front of the engine. Check the oil filter cut-open for plastic debris fragments. Request a Nissan dealer scan for camshaft correlation faults. Verify whether Nissan's extended goodwill warranty for this issue has been applied, and inspect the service history for proactive chain/guide replacement.
Where to look: Front timing cover, left-hand (driver's) side of the 1.2 DIG-T engine block
Ask the seller
“Has the timing chain, tensioner, and guides been replaced preventatively, and can you provide the dealer invoice?”
“Was this vehicle inspected under any Nissan goodwill programme for the 1.2 DIG-T timing chain issue?”
“Has the engine ever been replaced or rebuilt — if so, what was the documented reason?”
02Air Conditioning Compressor Clutch Failure
MinorCommonElectrical $400–$1,500 to fix
AC compressor clutch bearing wears causing squealing when AC is engaged.
Symptoms to notice
Squealing from engine front when AC is switched on
Noise stops when AC is switched off
What to check
Test AC during test drive. Listen for squealing from engine front when AC is engaged.
Where to look: AC compressor on front of engine
Ask the seller
“Has the air conditioning compressor clutch failure been inspected or repaired?”
