01M35 CVT Transmission Failure
CriticalCommonTransmission $3,850–$7,700 to fix
The RE0F09A CVT in M35 Stagea models develops belt-pulley wear that causes loss of ratio control, presenting as ratio hunting at cruise and inability to achieve top ratio. The push-belt steel elements fatigue at high mileage, and degraded CVT fluid from extended service intervals accelerates pulley surface scoring. Failure mode is typically progressive ratio slip before complete hydraulic failure. CVT replacement is the only practical repair as internal components are no longer available.
Symptoms to notice
Transmission slipping between gears
Transmission fluid leak
What to check
Check fluid level and condition (colour, smell). Test shift quality through all gears. Look for slipping, delay or harsh engagement. The RE0F09A CVT in M35 Stagea models develops belt-pulley wear that causes loss ...

02Rear Differential Output Shaft Oil Seal Leak
MinorCommonFluid Leaks $250–$600 to fix
Both C34 and C35 Stageas develop rear differential output shaft seal leaks with age, allowing gear oil to contaminate the inboard CV joint boots and drip onto the underfloor. The seals harden and crack from heat and age, and the condition is accelerated on AWD ATTESA models which place higher cyclical load on the differential. Commonly missed at pre-purchase inspection as the leak is often small and hidden above the CV boot.
Symptoms to notice
Gear oil smell from rear of vehicle after a drive
Oil staining on inboard CV joint boot
Drips under rear differential area after parking
Differential oil level gradually drops
What to check
Look for gear oil film or staining on the inboard CV boots. Check differential oil level and note any evidence of top-up. If a workshop inspection is possible: On a hoist, inspect both rear differential output shaft flanges where the shaft exits the differential casing.
Where to look: Rear differential, output shaft flanges, both sides
Ask the seller
“Has the rear differential oil been checked recently?”
“Any gear oil smell from the rear of the car?”
“Has the differential ever been resealed?”
