Nissan Patrol: ZD30DDi Injector O-Ring Failure Causing Diesel-in-Oil Contamination

ZD30DDi Injector O-Ring Failure Causing Diesel-in-Oil Contamination is a common engine fault on the Nissan Patrol on the 2000–2013 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $400 to $1,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 48 documented faults on the Nissan Patrol.

What goes wrong

The ZD30DDi uses high-pressure common-rail injectors seated with O-rings and copper washers that seal the lower injector body against the cylinder head. As these O-rings harden with age and heat cycling, diesel fuel leaks past the seal and tracks down the injector bore into the oil return gallery, entering the sump. Severe contamination thins the oil viscosity dramatically — dipstick oil smells of diesel and feels thin between fingers. Continued running with contaminated oil accelerates bearing wear throughout the engine. The failure is progressive; early detection by oil inspection can prevent secondary engine damage.

What you would notice

  • Oil dipstick reads above the max mark despite no oil top-ups having been performed
  • Engine oil smells strongly of diesel fuel and feels watery rather than viscous
  • Visible oily seepage or carbon streaking around one or more injector bodies at the cylinder head
  • Engine oil appears abnormally dark and thin on the dipstick within 2,000 km of an oil change

How to check it

Where to look. Injector O-rings at cylinder head, oil sump

  1. Pull the dipstick and smell the oil — diesel contamination is immediately detectable.

  2. Check that oil level reads above full (diesel addition raises the apparent level).

  3. Wipe a drop of oil on a white rag; diluted oil spreads rapidly rather than holding a bead.

  4. With the engine warm, inspect around each injector boss on the head for oily residue or carbon tracking indicating a weeping seal.

What it costs to put right

$400 to $1,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “When were the injector O-rings and copper washers last replaced?”
  • “Has the oil ever been found to be above the maximum mark on the dipstick?”
  • “Has the vehicle ever had an oil analysis done showing diesel contamination?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Nissan Patrol buyer questions

Is zd30ddi injector o-ring failure causing diesel-in-oil contamination serious on a Nissan Patrol?

We rate it major and common on the Nissan Patrol.

How much does it cost to fix on a Nissan Patrol?

$400 to $1,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Nissan Patrol years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2000–2013 Nissan Patrol. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

Pull the dipstick and smell the oil — diesel contamination is immediately detectable. Check that oil level reads above full (diesel addition raises the apparent level). Wipe a drop of oil on a white rag; diluted oil spreads rapidly rather than holding a bead.
