Nissan Serena: MR20DE/MR20DD EGR Valve Carbon Buildup Causing P0401

MR20DE/MR20DD EGR Valve Carbon Buildup Causing P0401 is a common engine fault on the Nissan Serena on the 2005 onward cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $280 to $950 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 27 documented faults on the Nissan Serena.

What you are looking at

No photograph available

We do not hold a verified photograph of the EGR valve yet. We would rather show none than show a picture of a different part.

What goes wrong

The exhaust gas recirculation valve on both the MR20DE and MR20DD engines is prone to heavy carbon deposit buildup on the valve seat and pintle, causing the valve to stick in a partially open or partially closed position. A stuck-open EGR valve dilutes the intake charge and causes rough idle, misfires, and increased fuel consumption. A stuck-closed valve triggers fault code P0401 (EGR flow below threshold) and trips the check engine light. The MR20DD direct injection variant is worse affected because direct injection does not wash the intake valves with fuel, allowing carbon from EGR gases to accumulate faster. The problem becomes symptomatic typically between 80,000 and 150,000 km and is a documented warranty item in Japan for early C27 models.

What you would notice

  • Check engine light with stored code P0401 or P0403
  • Rough or unstable idle, particularly when fully warmed up
  • Hesitation and stumble under light throttle
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Black carbon deposits visible at intake ports on MR20DD

How to check it

Where to look. Intake manifold, EGR valve mounted between exhaust manifold and intake plenum, upper engine area

Scan for P0401, P0402, or P0403 codes. If clear, check freeze frame data for historic EGR codes. Inspect the EGR valve and cooler outlet pipe for heavy carbon deposits and sticky valve movement. A live-data check of EGR duty cycle versus measured flow can confirm valve performance. If a workshop inspection is possible: On the MR20DD, a borescope inspection of intake ports will reveal carbon accumulation levels.

Parts involved: EGR valve.

What it costs to put right

$280 to $950 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the check engine light been on recently or has it been cleared?”
  • “Has the EGR valve ever been cleaned or replaced?”
  • “Has the vehicle ever idled roughly when warm?”
  • “What fuel grade and brand has been used?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Nissan Serena buyer questions

Is mr20de/mr20dd egr valve carbon buildup causing p0401 serious on a Nissan Serena?

We rate it major and common on the Nissan Serena. How much does it cost to fix on a Nissan Serena?

$280 to $950 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Nissan Serena years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2005 onward Nissan Serena. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

Scan for P0401, P0402, or P0403 codes. If clear, check freeze frame data for historic EGR codes. Inspect the EGR valve and cooler outlet pipe for heavy carbon deposits and sticky valve movement.
