What an EGR valve or cooler repair costs in NZ, by model

277 documented EGR faults across 164 models. Half of them start at or below $600, and half top out at or below $2,400. Every fault below shows its own range, from the cheapest fix recorded to the worst case. Figures are approximate, at New Zealand independent workshop rates.

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system feeds some exhaust gas back into the engine to cut emissions. On diesels in particular the valve clogs with soot and sticks, and the EGR cooler can crack and leak coolant into the engine.

What the price covers

Low figures are usually cleaning or replacing the valve. High figures are an EGR cooler replacement, which on some engines means significant labour, or engine damage from a cooler leak left too long.

How to check before you buy

Watch for an engine warning light, rough idle and a lack of power at low revs.
Check the coolant level. A falling level with no visible leak can be an EGR cooler.
Ask whether the EGR valve has been cleaned or replaced, and whether it has been blanked off, which is not legal.
