Nissan Stagea: WC34 propshaft centre bearing clunk on drive take-up

WC34 propshaft centre bearing clunk on drive take-up is a common transmission fault on the Nissan Stagea on the 1996–2001 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $350 to $900 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 22 documented faults on the Nissan Stagea.

What you are looking at

No photograph available

We do not hold a verified photograph of the Transfer case yet. We would rather show none than show a picture of a different part.

What goes wrong

The WC34 Stagea uses a two-piece steel propeller shaft with a rubber-bushed centre support bearing mounted to a crossmember beneath the cabin floor. The rubber carrier isolator and the ball bearing itself deteriorate due to age, vibration fatigue, and moisture ingress past the dust shield. As the bearing degrades, radial play increases in the shaft at the joint. Under drive engagement or load reversal (accelerating then lifting off), the shaft articulates through the worn bearing, producing a single or double clunk transmitted directly through the floor. On the ATTESA ET-S AWD variant, the transfer case output flange also loads the centre bearing differently under four-wheel torque distribution events, accelerating wear. Replacement requires shaft removal and pressing of new bearing.

What you would notice

  • Single clunk felt through floor when pulling away from rest
  • Vibration through centre tunnel at highway speeds between 90-110 km/h
  • Clunk on transition from acceleration to engine braking
  • Noise worsens in cold weather before rubber carrier warms up

How to check it

Where to look. Propeller shaft centre support bearing, mounted to crossmember beneath cabin floor mid-body

Lift vehicle and locate two-piece propshaft junction under centre of floor; grasp each shaft section and attempt to move radially — any play indicates bearing wear; inspect rubber carrier for cracking or separation from metal insert; check for grease leakage past dust seals on bearing.

Parts involved: Transfer case.

What it costs to put right

$350 to $900 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has there been any clunking when pulling away or changing between acceleration and braking?”
  • “Has the propshaft centre bearing been inspected or replaced?”
  • “Is there any vibration felt through the floor at highway speeds?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Nissan Stagea buyer questions

Is wc34 propshaft centre bearing clunk on drive take-up serious on a Nissan Stagea?

We rate it major and common on the Nissan Stagea. On the ATTESA ET-S AWD variant, the transfer case output flange also loads the centre bearing differently under four-wheel torque distribution events, accelerating wear. Replacement requires shaft removal and pressing of new bearing.

How much does it cost to fix on a Nissan Stagea?

$350 to $900 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Nissan Stagea years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 1996–2001 Nissan Stagea. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?

Lift vehicle and locate two-piece propshaft junction under centre of floor; grasp each shaft section and attempt to move radially — any play indicates bearing wear; inspect rubber carrier for cracking or separation from metal insert; check for grease leakage past dust seals on bearing.
