Skoda Kodiaq: DQ200 7-speed dry-clutch DSG mechatronics and clutch failure (1.4/1.5 TSI front-drive)
DQ200 7-speed dry-clutch DSG mechatronics and clutch failure (1.4/1.5 TSI front-drive) is a common transmission fault on the Skoda Kodiaq on the 2017 onward cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $2,000 to $6,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 7 documented faults on the Skoda Kodiaq.

What goes wrong
Front-wheel-drive 1.4 and 1.5 TSI Kodiaqs use VW Group's DQ200 7-speed dry-clutch DSG, the gearbox behind the huge 2013 Australia/NZ VW-Skoda recall for mechatronic (control unit and hydraulic accumulator) faults. Failures show up as shudder pulling away, jerky low-speed shifts, flashing PRNDS lights and sudden loss of drive; the mechatronic unit or clutch pack then needs replacement. The 4x4 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI Kodiaqs use the wet-clutch DQ250/DQ381, which is far more robust. Lots of urban stop-start driving accelerates dry-clutch wear, so ex-city cars are the higher risk.
What you would notice
- Shudder or juddering when pulling away from a stop
- Jerky or delayed 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd shifts
- Flashing PRNDS/gear indicator on the dash
- Momentary loss of drive or refusal to select gear
- Clacking or grinding on low-speed manoeuvres
How to check it
Where to look. Gearbox, front of the car under the engine bay (mechatronic unit bolts to the side of the DSG)
On the test drive do several slow crawls in traffic-style driving: creep, stop, creep again, and feel for shudder and hesitation. Do at least one hill start. Watch the gear display for flashing warnings. Ask for the service history and check whether the mechatronic unit or clutch pack has ever been replaced, and whether any DSG software updates or recall work was done.
What it costs to put right
$2,000 to $6,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “Is this the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (front-drive) or the wet-clutch box (4x4)?”
- “Has the mechatronic unit or clutch ever been replaced, with invoices?”
- “Has it spent its life in city stop-start traffic?”
Now check the Skoda Kodiaq you are actually looking at
Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Skoda Kodiaq buyer questions
Is dq200 7-speed dry-clutch dsg mechatronics and clutch failure (1.4/1.5 tsi front-drive) serious on a Skoda Kodiaq?
We rate it major and common on the Skoda Kodiaq. Front-wheel-drive 1.4 and 1.5 TSI Kodiaqs use VW Group's DQ200 7-speed dry-clutch DSG, the gearbox behind the huge 2013 Australia/NZ VW-Skoda recall for mechatronic (control unit and hydraulic accumulator) faults. How much does it cost to fix on a Skoda Kodiaq?
$2,000 to $6,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.
Which Skoda Kodiaq years are affected?
Our research records this fault on the 2017 onward Skoda Kodiaq. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
How do I check for it before I buy?
