Subaru STI: EJ257 Piston Ringland Failure
EJ257 Piston Ringland Failure is a common engine fault on the Subaru STI on the 2001–2021 cars, and we rate it critical. Putting it right costs $7,500 to $18,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 32 documented faults on the Subaru STI.

What goes wrong
The EJ257 boxer engine uses a closed-deck block with relatively thin piston crown ringlands. Under sustained high boost pressure (stock or modified), the third and fourth piston ringlands crack due to the combination of high cylinder pressures, detonation events from heat soak, and the lateral combustion forces inherent in a horizontally-opposed layout. Cylinder 4 is disproportionately affected because it runs hotter (end of the intake manifold, less fuel cooling). Ethanol blends, aggressive ignition timing, and pump fuel in hot ambient conditions accelerate ringland cracking. Once a ringland fractures, broken ring fragments score the bore walls and contaminate the oil system with aluminium debris, typically requiring a full short-block replacement.
What you would notice
- Engine knock or tick on cold start that worsens under load
- White or grey smoke from exhaust under boost
- Loss of power and boost pressure on one cylinder
- Low or uneven compression reading on cylinder 4
- Oil contamination with metallic silver particles
- Check engine light with cylinder-specific misfire codes
How to check it
Where to look. Engine block internals — pistons 3 and 4 most commonly affected in the horizontally-opposed layout
Pull the oil dipstick and inspect for silver metallic debris or sludge.
Check for any signs of recent engine work or head removal.
Ask for a borescope inspection of cylinder 4 crown.
If a workshop inspection is possible: Perform a cold compression test across all four cylinders — readings below 150 psi or a spread greater than 15 psi between cylinders is a red flag.
What it costs to put right
$7,500 to $18,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “Has the engine ever been tuned or remapped?”
- “What octane fuel has it been run on consistently?”
- “Has the car been used on a track or driven hard regularly?”
- “Has a compression or leak-down test been done recently?”
- “Is there any history of detonation or knock events?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Subaru STI buyer questions
Is ej257 piston ringland failure serious on a Subaru STI?
We rate it critical and common on the Subaru STI. The EJ257 boxer engine uses a closed-deck block with relatively thin piston crown ringlands. Ethanol blends, aggressive ignition timing, and pump fuel in hot ambient conditions accelerate ringland cracking. Once a ringland fractures, broken ring fragments score the bore walls and contaminate the oil system with aluminium debris, typically requiring a full short-block replacement.
How much does it cost to fix on a Subaru STI?
$7,500 to $18,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.
Which Subaru STI years are affected?
Our research records this fault on the 2001–2021 Subaru STI. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
How do I check for it before I buy?
Pull the oil dipstick and inspect for silver metallic debris or sludge. Check for any signs of recent engine work or head removal. Ask for a borescope inspection of cylinder 4 crown.
