Suzuki Jimny: Front Ball Joint and Kingpin Wear
Front Ball Joint and Kingpin Wear is a very common suspension fault on the Suzuki Jimny on the 1998–2018 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $400 to $1,600 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 27 documented faults on the Suzuki Jimny.

What you are looking at
Example of the part — not this vehicleA separated lower ball joint: the control arm has dropped and the wheel has splayed out under the guard.
What goes wrong
The JB23W and JB43W Jimny use a live solid front axle with kingpin-type steering swivel hubs rather than conventional MacPherson-strut ball joints. The kingpin assemblies rely on greased needle roller bearings and taper bushes that are exposed to mud, water, and grit on off-road use. When the nipples are not greased regularly the bearings run dry, accelerating wear in the kingpin bore and producing excessive steering play. The lower ball joint on the steering arm is a separate wear item and fails independently from the kingpin on high-mileage or off-road vehicles.
What you would notice
- Clunking or knocking felt through the steering wheel or floor over bumps
- Vague or wandering steering requiring constant correction at highway speeds
- Visible rocking of the front wheel when shaken at 12 and 6 o'clock positions with the wheel off the ground
- Uneven or rapid front tyre wear on the inner or outer edges
How to check it
Where to look. Front solid axle swivel hubs (kingpin assemblies), left and right; lower ball joints on steering arms
With the front wheels off the ground, grasp each front wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and attempt to rock it; any perceptible clunk or movement indicates kingpin play. Also check at 3 and 9 o'clock for wheel bearing looseness. Physically inspect grease nipples for blockage or absence. Check for grease purging from seals (sign of over-greasing or seal failure).
What it costs to put right
$400 to $1,600 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “Has the vehicle been used off-road regularly, and if so, how frequently were the kingpins greased?”
- “Has any clunking or looseness been noticed in the front steering?”
- “When were the front kingpins and ball joints last inspected or replaced?”

What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. Which Suzuki Jimny years are affected?
Our research records this fault on the 1998–2018 Suzuki Jimny. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way.
