What to look out for

The checks worth doing on a Suzuki SX4 before you hand over any money. Every documented fault is listed below, each with its own page.

  • Costly issue

During test drive, listen for speed-dependent humming and note if it changes on gentle steering left/right.

    See why

    Front Wheel Bearing Premature Failure

Front wheel bearings on the SX4 platform wear prematurely, particularly on higher-mileage examples or vehicles used on rough NZ/AU rural roads. The hub-integrated bearing design means the full hub-bearing assembly must be pressed out and replaced. Failure, if ignored, leads to dangerous wheel play and WOF rejection.

    What you would notice

    • Humming or growling noise from the front that varies with vehicle speed
    • Noise changes when steering slightly left or right at highway speed
    • Vibration through the steering wheel at certain speeds
    • Play or roughness felt when rocking the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock positions

    Typically $350–$700 to put right.

011.4 Boosterjet timing chain wear and chain-cover oil weep (S-Cross)

Confirm whether it is the 1.4 turbo or 1.6 non-turbo.petrol2013 onwardEngine
OccasionalEngine $900–$2,000 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

Unconfirmed. This entry does not match our record of which engines and years this model was sold with, and is awaiting review. Confirm it against the car before acting on it.

The second-generation SX4 S-Cross with the 1.4 Boosterjet turbo can show timing-chain wear between roughly 80,000-120,000 km, felt as a cold-start rattle and slightly uneven running, and left unchecked it risks serious engine damage. The chain cover on these engines can also weep a little oil. Well-maintained cars are fine, but the chain is the item to listen for on any turbo S-Cross.

Symptoms to notice

  • Rattle when starting from cold
  • Slightly uneven or rougher running
  • Small oil weep or damp patch at the front of the engine

What to check

  1. Confirm whether it is the 1.4 turbo or 1.6 non-turbo.
  2. Ask for a cold start and listen at the front for a rattle.
  3. Have a look at the timing-cover area for oil dampness.
  4. Ask the chain's service history if the car is past ~100,000 km.

Where to look: Timing (front) end of the engine, behind the chain cover

Parts involved: Timing chain.

Ask the seller

  • “Is this the 1.4 Boosterjet turbo?”
  • “Does it rattle on cold start, and has the chain been serviced?”
  • “Is there any oil weep at the front of the engine?”

02Fuel dilution in the oil on pre-2020 1.4 Boosterjet

Pull the dipstick: the level should not be over full, and the oil should not smell of fuel.petrol2013–2020Engine
OccasionalEngine $150–$600 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

Unconfirmed. This entry does not match our record of which engines and years this model was sold with, and is awaiting review. Confirm it against the car before acting on it.

Pre-2020 1.4 Boosterjet S-Cross engines can suffer fuel getting into the engine oil (fuel dilution), especially on cars doing lots of short, cold trips where the engine never fully warms. This thins the oil and, over time, accelerates wear. The tell-tale is an oil level that rises above full and smells of petrol. Buyers are advised to avoid a pre-2020 1.4 turbo without solid service records, and to check the dipstick carefully.

Symptoms to notice

  • Oil level on the dipstick above the full mark
  • Oil smells of petrol
  • Mostly short-trip, cold-running use

What to check

  1. Pull the dipstick: the level should not be over full, and the oil should not smell of fuel.
  2. Ask how the car is used - lots of short cold trips is the risk pattern - and whether oil changes have been on time.
  3. Favour a well-serviced car or the later hybrid.

Where to look: Engine oil / dipstick

Parts involved: Turbocharger.

Ask the seller

  • “Is this a pre-2020 1.4 turbo?”
  • “Does the oil ever read over full or smell of petrol?”
  • “Does it mostly do short trips, and are oil changes on time?”

03CVT Shudder and Belt Friction Degradation

Test drive at low speed with light throttle through the 20–60 km/h range.petrol2006 onwardTransmission
CommonTransmission $250–$4,800 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

SX4 models equipped with the Jatco CVT are susceptible to a low-speed shudder and lurch, typically appearing after 80,000–120,000 km of use. The root cause is degraded CVT fluid breaking down the steel-belt friction interface. Many examples arrive in NZ/AU with no CVT fluid service history. Advanced cases require belt or full unit replacement.

Symptoms to notice

  • Shudder or vibration through drivetrain at 20–60 km/h under light acceleration
  • Lurching or hesitation when pulling away from rest
  • CVT warning light or slipping sensation at highway speeds
  • Burnt smell from transmission area on extended drives

What to check

  1. Test drive at low speed with light throttle through the 20–60 km/h range.
  2. Check CVT fluid colour (should be red/pink, not brown or black).
  3. Ask for CVT fluid service records — fluid should be changed every 40,000 km on these units.

Where to look: CVT unit beneath the engine bay, transmission tunnel

Ask the seller

  • “Has the CVT fluid ever been changed, and if so, when?”
  • “Have you noticed any shudder or hesitation on gentle acceleration?”
  • “Has any CVT-related warning light appeared?”

01M15A Timing Chain Stretch and Tensioner Failure

Cold-start the engine and listen for chain rattle from the top of the engine in the first 5–10 seconds.petrol2006–2013Engine
CommonEngine $900–$2,200 to fix

Does not apply

The M15A 1.5-litre engine fitted to GY-generation SX4 models is prone to timing chain stretch and plastic tensioner wear, particularly after 100,000 km. Extended or infrequent oil changes promote sludge formation that starves the chain oiler, accelerating wear. Failure causes valve timing errors or catastrophic piston-to-valve contact if the chain skips a tooth.

The front of a dual overhead camshaft engine with the timing cover removed, exposing the timing chain and sprockets.Example of the part — not this vehicle

The front of a twin-cam engine with the timing cover off — chain, sprockets and guides.

Logansenf · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons

Symptoms to notice

  • Metallic rattling from the top of the engine on cold start, clearing once oil pressure builds
  • Check engine light with camshaft or crankshaft position codes (P0340, P0365)
  • Rough idle or engine hesitation under load
  • Visible sludge on oil filler cap or dipstick

What to check

  1. Cold-start the engine and listen for chain rattle from the top of the engine in the first 5–10 seconds.
  2. Pull the oil filler cap and inspect for sludge.
  3. Request service history showing oil changes at or below 7,500 km intervals.
  4. Scan ECU for timing-related fault codes.

Where to look: Front of engine block, upper timing chain cover area

Parts involved: Timing chain.

Ask the seller

  • “Can you show the full service history and oil change intervals?”
  • “Has the timing chain, tensioner or guides ever been replaced?”
  • “When was the last oil change and what oil grade was used?”

01Rapid front brake pad and disc wear

On the test drive brake firmly from about 50 km/h and feel for pulsing through the pedal and listen for grinding.2006–2014Brakes
CommonBrakes $400–$800 to fix

Does not apply

The SX4 is well known for chewing through front brakes faster than most rivals, with pads and often discs needing replacement sooner than owners expect. It is not dangerous if kept on top of, but budget for it and use it in negotiation. A car with grooved or lipped discs, or a grinding/squealing noise, likely needs pads and possibly discs straight away.

Symptoms to notice

  • Squeal or grind from the front when braking
  • Vibration through the pedal (warped or lipped discs)
  • Brakes needing attention at short intervals

What to check

On the test drive brake firmly from about 50 km/h and feel for pulsing through the pedal and listen for grinding. Peer through the front wheels at the disc surface for deep grooves or a rusty lip. Ask when pads and discs were last done.

Where to look: Front brakes at both front wheels

Parts involved: Brake disc and pads.

Ask the seller

  • “When were the front pads and discs last replaced?”
  • “Do the brakes grind, squeal or pulse?”
  • “How often has it needed brakes?”
Fluid leaks2

014WD Rear Coupling Oil Seal Leak

Check fluid level in the coupling unit.petrol2006–2013Fluid Leaks
OccasionalFluid Leaks $500–$1,400 to fix

Does not apply

GY-generation SX4 4WD models use an electronically controlled rear coupling unit. The input shaft and output flange seals are known to weep or leak, allowing coupling fluid loss. Low fluid causes the coupling to overheat during AWD engagement, producing stuttering on tight turns and eventual clutch-pack failure requiring full coupling replacement.

Symptoms to notice

  • Oil staining or drips beneath the rear coupling area
  • Vibration or binding on tight low-speed turns when AWD is engaged
  • AWD warning light or loss of rear drive engagement
  • Burnt smell from rear of vehicle after driving on gravel or hills

What to check

  1. Check fluid level in the coupling unit.
  2. Test AWD engagement and listen for binding on a full-lock slow turn in a car park.
  3. If a workshop inspection is possible: Lift the vehicle and inspect underneath for oil seepage around rear coupling flanges.

Where to look: Rear of vehicle, between rear propshaft and rear differential/coupling unit

Parts involved: Clutch.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the 4WD system ever shown a warning light or been serviced?”
  • “Is there any vibration or judder when turning sharply at low speed?”
  • “Has the rear coupling fluid ever been checked or changed?”

02Rear differential / axle oil leaks on AWD models

Confirm whether the car is AWD or front-drive.2006–2014Fluid Leaks
OccasionalFluid Leaks $300–$700 to fix

Does not apply

On four-wheel-drive SX4s the rear differential and axle seals are a known leak point, seeping oil that, if it runs the diff low, leads to whining and expensive wear. It is easy to miss because the leak is at the back of the car underneath. Front-wheel-drive cars don't have the rear diff, so this only applies to AWD examples - worth checking given many SX4s were bought for their all-weather ability.

Symptoms to notice

  • Oily film or drips around the rear diff and axle
  • Whine or drone from the rear that rises with speed (AWD)
  • Fresh oil marks where the car parks

What to check

  1. Confirm whether the car is AWD or front-drive.
  2. On AWD, look under the rear for oil weeping from the diff and axle seals, and listen on the drive for a rear whine.
  3. Check the ground where it parks for drips.

Where to look: Rear differential and axle seals (AWD models only)

Parts involved: Differential.

Ask the seller

  • “Is this the AWD or the front-wheel-drive model?”
  • “Has the rear diff ever leaked or been low on oil?”
  • “Any whine from the back on the motorway?”
