What a CVT gearbox repair costs in NZ, by model
315 documented CVT gearbox faults across 147 models. Half of them start at or below $500, and half top out at or below $5,900. Every fault below shows its own range, from the cheapest fix recorded to the worst case. Figures are approximate, at New Zealand independent workshop rates.
A CVT (continuously variable transmission) is an automatic with no fixed gears. A steel belt or chain runs between two pulleys that change size. They are smooth and economical, and common on Japanese imports, but some designs are known for judder, belt slip and overheating, and a failed unit is often replaced rather than repaired.
What the price covers
The low end of each range is usually a fluid change, a software update or a valve body repair. The high end is a replacement or reconditioned gearbox fitted. Where the table shows a wide range, the difference is usually whether the fault was caught early.
How to test before you buy
- Drive it from cold and accelerate gently from a stop. Judder, shudder or a slipping feel is the warning.
- Listen for a whine that rises with speed.
- Ask when the CVT fluid was last changed. Many owners never do it.
- Take it up a long hill if you can. Some CVTs go into a limp mode when hot.

About these figures
Each range is the one documented against that fault in the KickTyres catalogue, at independent workshop rates in New Zealand. Dealer labour, genuine parts and damage found along the way push a real bill higher; a reconditioned part or an early catch can bring it lower.
