Toyota Ist: Super CVT-i (K310) shudder and whine from fluid neglect (XP110)

Super CVT-i (K310) shudder and whine from fluid neglect (XP110) is a common transmission fault on the Toyota Ist on the 2007–2016 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $300 to $4,900 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 12 documented faults on the Toyota Ist.

What goes wrong

Second-generation Ists pair the 1.5 with Toyota's K310 Super CVT-i. The transmission itself has a decent record, but it is intolerant of old fluid: Toyota's near-lifetime service interval means most JDM imports have never had a CVT fluid change, and neglected units develop take-off shudder, whine and rev flare as the belt and pulleys wear. NZ CVT specialists and workshops recommend servicing every 40,000-50,000 km and note that once shudder persists after a fluid change the unit is worn — replacement remanufactured Toyota CVTs run roughly $2,600-$3,900 plus about $900-$1,000 fitting in NZ.

What you would notice

  • Shudder or vibration when pulling away from a stop
  • Whine rising with road speed
  • Revs flaring without the car accelerating to match
  • Hesitation or clunk engaging Drive or Reverse

How to check it

Where to look. CVT transmission on the front of the car, bolted to the engine

  1. Test drive from cold.

  2. Creep out of a parking space and accelerate gently — shudder through the floor at walking pace is the classic sign.

  3. Hold 60-80 km/h with the radio off and listen for whine.

  4. Watch for the tacho climbing while speed lags (slip).

  5. Ask for a CVT fluid service invoice; with no history, budget an immediate service (~$300) and be suspicious of any existing shudder, which usually means wear a fluid change will not cure.

What it costs to put right

$300 to $4,900 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the CVT fluid ever been changed with genuine Toyota CVT fluid?”
  • “Does it shudder or hesitate when moving off?”
  • “Has the transmission ever been repaired or replaced?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Toyota Ist buyer questions

Is super cvt-i (k310) shudder and whine from fluid neglect (xp110) serious on a Toyota Ist?

We rate it major and common on the Toyota Ist. Second-generation Ists pair the 1.5 with Toyota's K310 Super CVT-i. How much does it cost to fix on a Toyota Ist?

$300 to $4,900 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Toyota Ist years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2007–2016 Toyota Ist. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?
