What goes wrong
First-generation RAV4s are now 24–32 years old and rust is endemic in vehicles that spent any time in coastal or wet climates common in New Zealand. Primary rust zones are the sill sections behind the front and rear wheel arches, the floor pan beneath the carpet, the spare wheel well under the rear cargo area, and the chassis rails forward of the rear axle. NZ examples are at higher risk than dry-climate Australian vehicles. Severe sill or chassis rust can compromise structural integrity and will fail a WoF inspection.
What you would notice
- Bubbling or blistering paint along the lower sill and wheel arch edges
- Soft or spongy floor feel when pressing down on the carpet
- Visible surface rust or pitting on the chassis rails under the vehicle
- Damp or musty smell inside the cabin, especially in the rear footwells
How to check it
Where to look. Sills, floor pan, rear spare wheel well, chassis rails
Push firmly on the lower sill at multiple points — any flex or give indicates rust perforation.
Pull back the boot carpet to inspect the spare wheel well base.
Check the floor pan inside the cabin by lifting the carpet and underlay in the rear footwells.
Inspect all four wheel arch lips where the pressed metal meets the sill.
If a workshop inspection is possible: Lift the vehicle on a hoist or use a torch and mirror to inspect chassis rails, rear cross-member, and sills from underneath.
What it costs to put right
$800 to $5,000 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “Has the vehicle always been garaged, and was it used in a coastal or high-rainfall area?”
- “Has any rust remediation or cavity wax injection been carried out?”
- “Has the vehicle recently passed a WoF, and were any rust-related advisories noted?”
