Toyota Runx: M20A-FKS Timing Chain Cold-Start Rattle

M20A-FKS Timing Chain Cold-Start Rattle is a common engine fault on the Toyota Runx on the 2019–2022 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $800 to $2,800 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 44 documented faults on the Toyota Runx.

What goes wrong

On 2019–2021 production M20A-FKS 2.0-litre engines, the timing chain tensioner spring rate was insufficient to maintain adequate chain tension during the brief oil-starvation window at cold start. The resulting slack allows the chain to slap the guide, producing a pronounced metallic rattle for 1–5 seconds that diminishes once oil pressure builds. Toyota addressed the root cause via TSB T-SB-0067-19, which specifies replacement of the chain tensioner assembly with a revised part and a recalibrated ECU fuel-cut map to reduce instantaneous torque during cold-crank.

What you would notice

  • Metallic rattling or chattering noise on cold start lasting 1–5 seconds
  • Noise originates from front-left of engine and disappears once oil pressure builds
  • Check Engine light in severe or neglected cases (P0016/P0017 cam-crank correlation codes)
  • Rattling may worsen in cold ambient temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius
  • Oil consumption slightly elevated on affected units

How to check it

Where to look. Front of engine block, timing chain cover, left-hand side of bay

  1. Start engine from dead-cold and listen immediately for metallic chain rattle from the front-left of the engine.

  2. Check service records for TSB T-SB-0067-19 application and tensioner replacement.

  3. Inspect oil level and condition — low or degraded oil worsens onset.

Parts involved: Timing chain.

What it costs to put right

$800 to $2,800 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.

An estimate, in NZD, for the repair as normally carried out. What a specific car costs depends on which part has failed and what it damaged on the way — treat this as the floor for a negotiation, not a quote.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the timing chain tensioner been replaced under TSB T-SB-0067-19, and can you show the dealer service record?”
  • “Does the engine make any rattling or ticking noise when started cold first thing in the morning?”
  • “Has the vehicle ever shown a Check Engine light related to camshaft or crankshaft position codes?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Where this comes from

The failure described above is documented in published sources — owner forums, technical service bulletins, recall notices and workshop write-ups — held in our fault database. The inspection instructions and the cost estimate are KickTyres’ own interpretation of them, and it is a starting point for an inspection rather than a manufacturer statement.

Toyota Runx buyer questions

Is m20a-fks timing chain cold-start rattle serious on a Toyota Runx?

We rate it major and common on the Toyota Runx.

How much does it cost to fix on a Toyota Runx?

$800 to $2,800 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.

Which Toyota Runx years are affected?

Our research records this fault on the 2019–2022 Toyota Runx. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.

How do I check for it before I buy?
