Toyota Wish: 3ZR-FAE Valvematic Controller Failure
3ZR-FAE Valvematic Controller Failure is a common electrical fault on the Toyota Wish on the 2009–2017 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $850 to $2,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 32 documented faults on the Toyota Wish.

What goes wrong
The AE20 Wish uses Toyota's 3ZR-FAE engine equipped with the Valvematic variable valve lift system, which replaces the traditional throttle body with a camshaft-operated intake valve lift controller. The Valvematic actuator motor and its position sensor are exposed to engine bay heat cycling and develop internal brush wear, gear backlash, or sensor drift over time. When the controller fails or returns an out-of-range signal, the ECU logs trouble codes P0011, P0012, P0014, or P0016 (camshaft position sensor/actuator codes) and sets the check engine light. The engine enters a limp-home mode with reduced throttle response and raised idle. Secondary failures include intake carbon buildup because the system runs without a traditional throttle plate to scrub the intake ports. Replacement of the actuator assembly is the standard repair; coding is required after fitment.
What you would notice
- Check engine light with P0011, P0012, P0014, or VVT-related fault codes
- Poor throttle response or hesitation from idle
- Rough or high idle after cold start
- Reduced power in limp mode
- Audible clicking or grinding from intake side of engine
How to check it
Where to look. Intake camshaft Valvematic actuator, engine left side (passenger side for RHD)
Listen for mechanical noise from the intake camshaft actuator housing on the left side of the engine.
Check for carbon deposits on throttle bore area.
Verify the engine pulls cleanly from idle and does not stumble under light throttle.
If a workshop inspection is possible: OBD-II scan for camshaft and Valvematic actuator fault codes before purchase.
What it costs to put right
$850 to $2,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “Has the check engine light ever been on? What codes were stored?”
- “Has the Valvematic actuator or any camshaft component been replaced?”
- “Has the engine ever been carbon cleaned?”
- “Does the engine idle smoothly from cold?”

Everything above is true of the model, and it is free. What it does not tell you is whether THIS car has been looked after: its odometer history and whether the reading has ever gone backwards, whether there is still money owing on it, whether it has been reported stolen, how many owners it has had and what it is really worth today. That comes from the official records for that plate. Enter the plate for the free details, or get the full history and a market valuation from $13.49.

Toyota Wish buyer questions
Is 3zr-fae valvematic controller failure serious on a Toyota Wish?
We rate it major and common on the Toyota Wish. How much does it cost to fix on a Toyota Wish?
$850 to $2,200 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.
Which Toyota Wish years are affected?
Our research records this fault on the 2009–2017 Toyota Wish. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
How do I check for it before I buy?
Listen for mechanical noise from the intake camshaft actuator housing on the left side of the engine. Check for carbon deposits on throttle bore area. Verify the engine pulls cleanly from idle and does not stumble under light throttle. If a workshop inspection is possible: OBD-II scan for camshaft and Valvematic actuator fault codes before purchase.
