01N57/B57 Diesel Rear Timing Chain Failure

Both the N57 (F01/F02, 2008-2015) and B57 (G11/G12, 2015-2022) 3.0-litre straight-six diesels are documented for rear timing chain failure. The chain is driven from the rear of the engine (transmission-end), requiring engine or transmission removal for access, making this a disproportionately expensive repair. Failure is driven by chain stretch from cold-start oil starvation in engines run on extended drain intervals, combined with tensioner wear. The B57 diesel selective catalytic reduction system uses a Bosch dosing pump to inject AdBlue into the exhaust stream. The pump is prone to internal seal degradation and AdBlue crystallisation blockages, causing incorrect dosing pressure or complete failure. Engine management detects NOx exceedance or system pressure faults and enters a derate mode limiting power. If unresolved within a kilometre or start-cycle countdown, the engine will refuse to restart. A failed pump also risks crystallisation upstream of the SCR injector requiring additional cleaning.
