What to look out for
Serious issue
Inspect ride height visually at all four corners — any low corner indicates a failed strut.
Air Suspension Strut Bladder Failure and Compressor Burn-Out
The F01/F02 and G11/G12 7 Series use four-corner air suspension (Electronic Damper Control) as standard. Air spring bladders degrade from ozone, UV exposure, and heat cycling — F01s are now 10-18 years old in the NZ/AU market, making strut failure essentially expected. The air compressor overworks to compensate for leaking struts and burns out. Single-strut failures are common, but compressor burn-out often follows shortly if the leaking strut is not addressed first. A failed air suspension defaults to bump-stop ride height and is a fail-WOF condition in NZ. Conversion to passive coilovers is a common but handling-compromising workaround.

Park on level ground and compare all four corner heights.
Front Air Suspension Strut Failure Causing Nose Drop
Both the F01 and G11 7 Series use front air suspension struts as standard. The air bellow rubber sleeve degrades from ozone exposure, heat cycling, and UV hardening, leading to cracking and progressive air loss. A failed strut causes the front corner to slowly or suddenly drop, triggering ride height warnings on the iDrive display. Failure can be gradual with the nose dropping overnight or sudden with immediate nose drop while driving. The air compressor may run continuously trying to maintain height, accelerating its own premature failure. The electronic height sensors can also fail independently producing false warnings.

Integral Active Steering Rear Actuator Failure EPS Fault
The G11/G12 7 Series Integral Active Steering system steers the rear wheels by up to 3 degrees via an electromechanical rear axle actuator. The actuator contains a brushless motor, worm drive, and position sensor assembly prone to moisture ingress through failed internal seals causing winding degradation and control unit faults. A failed actuator triggers an EPS warning and disables rear steering, altering handling characteristics. In some failure modes the rear wheels may be left at a residual non-zero steer angle. Replacement actuators are only available as an assembly and require full rear alignment after fitting.

The ZF 8HP70/8HP75 automatic transmission fitted to late F01 (from 2012) and all G11/G12 7 Series is documented for solenoid pack and valve body bore wear, particularly in vehicles that have never had transmission fluid changed. BMW marketed the unit as sealed-for-life, but degraded fluid causes solenoid sluggishness and valve body bore wear, resulting in harsh or delayed gear changes and fault codes. This pattern is well-documented across all BMW/Rolls-Royce/Land Rover/Jaguar applications of the ZF 8HP and is known to independent transmission specialists in NZ/AU.

The N63 V8 uses twin mechanically-driven high-pressure fuel pumps, each driven off a camshaft lobe. The pumps are documented for premature wear, particularly in vehicles run on substandard fuel or that experienced extended low-oil-level periods (itself a consequence of the N63 oil consumption defect). Pump failure causes lean running, misfires, and hard starting. In some cases, metal debris from HPFP wear enters the fuel system, requiring injector flushing or replacement. This is a documented pattern across the N-series BMW V8 family and is compounded by the N63 oil consumption issue.

BMW 7 Series buyer questions
Is the BMW 7 Series reliable?
Like any used car, it depends on the specific example and its service history. Across the 12 documented faults for the BMW 7 Series, the recurring problem areas are engine, suspension, and fluid leaks. A BMW 7 Series with a full service history and no signs of the issues listed on this page can be a sound buy but each one needs to be checked individually before you commit.
What are the most common problems with a used BMW 7 Series?
We've catalogued 12 known faults for the BMW 7 Series, covering engine, suspension, and fluid leaks. All 12 are written out in full on this page, with the symptoms to notice, what to inspect, and typical repair costs for each. Free to read, no account needed.
How much do repairs cost on a BMW 7 Series?
Most single repairs on the BMW 7 Series fall between $2,200–$6,500 at NZ independent-workshop rates. Some of the 12 documented faults cost less and a few cost considerably more, and no one car needs them all. Knowing which ones to look for before you view is what lets you negotiate the price down or walk away.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a BMW 7 Series?
Yes. A BMW 7 Series inspection focused on its known weak points is the single best way to avoid an expensive mistake. KickTyres gives you a guided, model-specific inspection plus a market valuation and negotiation figure for $24.90 far less than the cost of missing one of the faults on this page.
