Honda Jazz: CVT Start Clutch Judder on Acceleration
CVT Start Clutch Judder on Acceleration is a common transmission fault on the Honda Jazz on the 2020–2024 cars, and we rate it major. Putting it right costs $250 to $4,500 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. Below is what goes wrong, the symptoms to notice on a test drive, where to look, and what to ask the seller before you hand over any money. It is one of 51 documented faults on the Honda Jazz.

What goes wrong
The L15Z3 petrol Jazz uses a belt-drive CVT with an internal wet start clutch. Honda has an established history of service bulletins (including TSBs 17-025 and 17-026 with subsequent updates covering the GR-generation Jazz and Fit) addressing judder caused by CVT fluid thermal degradation. Under heavy urban stop-start driving and high heat load, CVT fluid loses its friction modifier additives faster than expected. This causes the start clutch to slip and chatter during light acceleration from rest. The primary remedy is a double drain-and-refill of Honda HCF-2 CVT fluid, sometimes combined with a PCM software update. In neglected cases, the start clutch itself requires replacement.
What you would notice
- Shudder or vibration felt through the drivetrain during gentle acceleration from rest
- Chattering sensation between 10–40 km/h under light throttle opening
- Symptom worsens progressively after sustained urban stop-start driving
- Symptom temporarily improves after long highway runs as fluid temperature stabilises
- Condition deteriorates faster if non-Honda or incorrect specification CVT fluid has been used
How to check it
Where to look. CVT transmission unit, underfloor centre between engine and front wheels
Test drive with gentle-to-moderate acceleration from a standstill; note any vibration, shudder, or chattering between 10–40 km/h.
Check CVT fluid condition and service records for fluid changes using Honda HCF-2 specification.
Ask whether any transmission-related TSB software update has been applied.
Symptoms are typically worse after extended urban driving and temporarily less obvious after highway runs.
What it costs to put right
$250 to $4,500 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That is for this job on its own, not for the car.
Ask the seller
- “Has the CVT fluid ever been changed, and what specification fluid was used — Honda HCF-2 or an aftermarket equivalent?”
- “Has the car ever shuddered or vibrated during gentle acceleration from rest?”
- “Has any transmission-related Honda TSB software update been applied by a Honda dealer?”

Honda Jazz buyer questions
Is cvt start clutch judder on acceleration serious on a Honda Jazz?
We rate it major and common on the Honda Jazz. The L15Z3 petrol Jazz uses a belt-drive CVT with an internal wet start clutch. How much does it cost to fix on a Honda Jazz?
$250 to $4,500 at New Zealand independent workshop rates. That figure is for this job on its own. A car showing the symptoms on this page is usually worth either walking away from or negotiating down by at least the repair figure.
Which Honda Jazz years are affected?
Our research records this fault on the 2020–2024 Honda Jazz. Build dates move around, especially on imported cars, so treat the range as the years to look hardest at rather than a guarantee either way. The official records tell you the exact build and first registration date for the car in front of you.
How do I check for it before I buy?
Test drive with gentle-to-moderate acceleration from a standstill; note any vibration, shudder, or chattering between 10–40 km/h.
