What to look out for

The checks worth doing on a Kia Picanto before you hand over any money. Every documented fault is listed below, each with its own page.

  • Costly issue

Inspect both front calipers for free movement of the sliding pins.

    See why

    Front Brake Caliper Piston Seizure

JA Picantos suffer from front brake caliper piston seizure, particularly on vehicles used primarily for short urban trips. Infrequent full brake travel allows piston dust seals to harden and the piston to corrode within the bore, causing the caliper to bind. The result is uneven pad wear (inner pad significantly more worn than outer), brake drag, and pulling under braking. The small piston bore design in economy calipers is more susceptible to seizure than larger caliper designs.

    What you would notice

    • Vehicle pulls to one side under braking
    • One front disc significantly more worn or heat-blued than the other
    • Brake drag — car does not roll freely when released from a stop
    • Inner pad worn significantly thinner than outer pad on the same corner

    Typically $250–$600 to put right.

  • One front disc significantly more worn or heat-blued than the other
  • Brake drag — car does not roll freely when released from a stop
  • Inner pad worn significantly thinner than outer pad on the same corner

What to check

  1. Inspect both front calipers for free movement of the sliding pins.
  2. Attempt to compress each piston with a C-clamp — a seized piston will resist.
  3. Compare inner and outer pad thickness on each side.
  4. Look for rust on the piston face, which indicates it has not been retracting fully.

Where to look: Front brake calipers, both sides

Parts involved: Brake disc and pads.

Ask the seller

  • “Have the brake calipers been serviced or rebuilt recently?”
  • “Does the car pull to one side when braking?”
  • “When were the brake pads and rotors last replaced?”

021.0 T-GDI turbo: timing chain wear and intake carbon build-up (GT-Line)

Cold-start the car and listen for chain clatter in the first seconds, then listen for a whine on the drive.petrol2017 onwardEngine
OccasionalEngine $800–$2,200 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

The turbocharged 1.0 T-GDI in the third-generation Picanto GT has documented timing chain problems - metallic clatter on start-up developing into a loud whine or whirring on normal driving, with some cars on UK forums needing chain, tensioner and guides replaced more than once. As a direct-injection engine it also builds carbon on the intake valves because fuel never washes over them, causing rough idle, cold-start misfires and gradual power loss on urban-driven cars. Strict 100% oil-change discipline with the correct grade is the main defence.

Symptoms to notice

  • Metallic clatter on start-up
  • Whine or whirring that grows with engine speed
  • Rough idle and cold-start misfires
  • Sluggish response and worse fuel economy over time

What to check

Cold-start the car and listen for chain clatter in the first seconds, then listen for a whine on the drive. Check the oil service history against the turbo engine's shorter intervals. On higher-km cars ask if intake valve cleaning (walnut blasting) has been done.

Where to look: Timing chain and intake tract at the engine; noise from the right-hand end of the bay

Parts involved: Timing chain, Turbocharger.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the timing chain or tensioner ever been replaced?”
  • “Has it had every oil change on time with the correct oil?”
  • “Any cold-start rattle or misfires?”

01Crankshaft pulley bolt loosening or shearing

The bolt holding the crankshaft pulley on can work loose or shear, and reports include failures from as little as 65,000 km.petrol2004–2011Engine
OccasionalEngine $400–$4,000 to fix

Does not apply

The bolt holding the crankshaft pulley on can work loose or shear, and reports include failures from as little as 65,000 km. Once it lets go the pulley no longer drives the accessories properly, so the car loses charging and power steering assistance, and in the worst reported cases the crankshaft itself snaps behind the timing gear — which ends the engine. It announces itself as a knock or rattle from the bottom front of the engine and often a wandering idle. This is a less famous fault than the timing chain but a more sudden one, and the two live at the same end of the engine, so a noise from there deserves a proper look rather than a guess.

Symptoms to notice

  • Knock or rattle from the bottom front of the engine
  • Erratic idle, stalling, or difficulty starting
  • Battery or power steering warning light as the belt loses drive
  • Sudden loss of engine power

What to check

  1. With the engine idling and the bonnet up, look at the crankshaft pulley at the bottom front of the engine — it should spin true, with no visible wobble or side-to-side movement, and the accessory belt above it should run straight rather than tracking in and out.
  2. Listen at the same spot for a knock or rattle distinct from the timing-chain noise higher up.
  3. Watch the tachometer at idle for a rev that wanders rather than sits steady.
  4. Check the dash for a battery or power steering warning at any point.
  5. Ask whether the belt, pulley or crank bolt has ever been worked on.
  6. If a workshop inspection is possible: have the crank pulley bolt torque and pulley runout checked — this is a cheap check now and an engine later.

Where to look: Bottom front of the engine — crankshaft pulley and its centre bolt

Parts involved: Steering rack, Timing chain.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the crankshaft pulley or its bolt ever been replaced or re-torqued?”
  • “Is there any knock or rattle from the bottom of the engine?”
  • “Has a battery or power steering light ever come on?”

044-speed automatic jerky shifting and hesitation

Test drive from cold if possible - auto faults show worst on the first drive of the day.petrol2007–2013Transmission
OccasionalTransmission $300–$3,000 to fix

Does not apply

Picantos with the elderly 4-speed automatic show gearbox complaints from around 60,000-80,000 km, particularly 2009-2013 builds: jerky 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, hesitation to kick down, and occasional refusal to shift cleanly between gears. Often it is degraded ATF that has never been changed, but valve-body wear does occur. Because the gearbox is worth more than the car, a properly failing unit is usually terminal for the vehicle.

Symptoms to notice

  • Harsh or delayed 1-2 shift when cold
  • Flaring revs between gears
  • Clunk engaging Drive or Reverse

What to check

  1. Test drive from cold if possible - auto faults show worst on the first drive of the day.
  2. Do several full-throttle kickdowns and stop-start cycles.
  3. Check whether the ATF has ever been serviced; a fluid and filter change is cheap insurance but will not fix a worn box.

Where to look: Automatic transaxle, left side of the engine bay

Parts involved: Mechatronic / valve body.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the automatic transmission fluid ever been changed?”
  • “Does it shift harshly when cold?”

06Timing chain rattle and tensioner wear at higher mileage (1.0/1.25)

Insist on a stone-cold start - put your hand on the bonnet first to check the seller hasn't pre-warmed it.petrol2011–2017Engine
OccasionalEngine $900–$1,800 to fix

Does not apply

Second-generation Picantos moved to timing chains on the 1.0 three-cylinder and 1.25 four-cylinder. The chain is meant to be lifetime, but rattling on cold start and uneven running from a stretched chain or lazy tensioner shows up on higher-mileage cars, typically 80,000-120,000 km, especially where oil changes were stretched. Ignored, a badly stretched chain can jump timing on an interference engine.

The front of a twin-cam engine with the timing cover off — chain, sprockets and guides.

Logansenf · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons

Symptoms to notice

  • Metallic rattle for the first few seconds after a cold start
  • Rattle at idle that fades with revs
  • Uneven idle or cam/crank correlation fault codes

What to check

  1. Insist on a stone-cold start - put your hand on the bonnet first to check the seller hasn't pre-warmed it.
  2. Listen at the right-hand end of the engine for chain rattle in the first 5-10 seconds.
  3. Check for consistent oil change history; sludge kills these tensioners.

Where to look: Timing chain at the right-hand (belt) end of the engine, behind the timing cover

Parts involved: Timing chain.

Ask the seller

  • “Does it rattle on cold start?”
  • “How often has the oil been changed, and with what grade?”

07Fuel pump failure at 100,000-130,000 km

Turn the key to ON without starting and listen for the 2-second pump prime from the rear of the car.petrol2004–2011Engine
OccasionalEngine $350–$700 to fix

Does not apply

First-generation Picantos have a documented pattern of in-tank fuel pump failure, typically between 100,000 and 130,000 km, often triggered by contamination or electrical faults in the pump circuit. The car cuts out or refuses to start, sometimes intermittently at first, which gets misdiagnosed as ignition trouble. Most NZ examples are now well into this mileage band.

Symptoms to notice

  • Intermittent cutting out, especially when hot or low on fuel
  • Long cranking before start
  • Whining noise from under the rear seat/fuel tank

What to check

  1. Turn the key to ON without starting and listen for the 2-second pump prime from the rear of the car.
  2. Start the car several times during the viewing, including once fully warmed up.
  3. Ask whether it has ever cut out or been slow to start.

Where to look: In-tank fuel pump under the rear seat / fuel tank

Parts involved: In-tank fuel pump.

Ask the seller

  • “Has it ever stalled or refused to start when hot?”
  • “Has the fuel pump or fuel filter ever been replaced?”
