What a cambelt replacement costs in NZ, by model
209 documented cambelt faults across 154 models. Half of them start at or below $650, and half top out at or below $2,500. Every fault below shows its own range, from the cheapest fix recorded to the worst case. Figures are approximate, at New Zealand independent workshop rates.
A cambelt (timing belt) keeps the engine’s valves and pistons in step. It is a service item with a replacement interval set by kilometres and by age, and on many engines a belt that breaks lets the pistons hit the valves, which can mean a new engine rather than a new belt.
What the price covers
A planned replacement is mostly labour, and usually includes the tensioner, idler pulleys and often the water pump. The upper figures in the table are for belts that failed in service and took engine damage with them. That gap is why the belt’s history matters so much on a used car.
How to check before you buy
- Look for a sticker on or near the timing cover recording the kilometres and date of the last change.
- Ask for the invoice. A sticker alone proves little.
- If there is no evidence and the car is near or past the interval, price a replacement into your offer.
- Check whether the engine has a belt or a chain at all: the model page for the car says which faults apply.
Our cambelt checking guide walks through the check in more detail.

About these figures
Each range is the one documented against that fault in the KickTyres catalogue, at independent workshop rates in New Zealand. Dealer labour, genuine parts and damage found along the way push a real bill higher; a reconditioned part or an early catch can bring it lower. Get a written quote for the car you are looking at, and use these figures to judge it.
